When you click on a download, a window appears and askes you if you want to OPEN or SAVE TO DISK is that not the case with you.

What type of viewer are you using and what type of file format are you trying to DL?

For me I right-click on the link if I want to save it somewhere (XP Pro).

exactly, thats what happened. i accidently hit the one check box at the bottom so now it just automatically just opens it. thought i could just use the right click save as method

OK, another way is to let it download (noting filename), then search for it in the Temp Internet files and bung it where you want it.

When I download, A left mouse click downloads the movie straight into the viewer, A right mouse click gives me a drop down menu where I can select Save Target as…

IIRC not all file types bring up the open or save option window, could just be the file types you are trying to download.
Again IIRC there are some file types that to cannot save to disc.

well before i could dl them(video files) with the option to save as or open when i left click. accidentally changed something and dont know how to fix it. But for other file types it still brings up the open, save as window. guess i wil just have to stick to the right clicking

Try this:

Open a Explorer Window, select Tools -> Folder Options. Select the File Types tab.

Should get a list of all file types XP knows about, scroll to find the video type (AVI, MPG etc) you want and select it.

In the lower area of the dialog it should give you some details about the extension and what app it is associated with. Click the Advanced button and tick the "Confirm open after download" option.

Never had the problem you have so don't know if this actually fixes it. Worth a try though. YMMV
