Ultima at AutoSport Show

Went to AutoSport show yesterday and spotted the Ultima Stand....... and appalled to see their demo with what looked like a naff halfords special gear stick (plastic looking thing from a max power mag).....urrrghhhh
A nice piece of polished aluminium would have been nice.
Also the cars were roped off so no one could get close enough.
Unfortunately they have now gone down in my estimation

The number of people who comment on the gearknob is quite staggering I've discovered ditto the steering wheel. Considering they cost 0„520 and 0„570 respectively I wonder whether I would have been better with a plywood mock up of the rest of the car...

And both are easily changed. It's like going to buy a Lamborghini Gallardo and changing your mind because the valve caps aren't to your taste.

I've also opted for the Getrag 6 speed which is the same 'box as is in the red GTR at Autosports Int. I didn't particularly like the design of the gear knob either and looked into getting it changed but it is not a simple case of screwing on another knob. The Porsche knob is an interference fit so you will need to fabricate a new lever mechanism. Too much hassle for me, so I have convinced myself that I actually quite like the standard article.

I havn't looked into this very much (will look tonight) but I had intended to get it off by destroying it (cut it off) and then fitting one similar to the alloy one currently fitted in my ultima.

Personally I like the look of the centre consul and think the lever fits in nicely. However despite the look if you get the chance to drive it I'm sure you'll fall in love with it, as it is a very nice gear change and those who have driven my car find it much better than the sill mounted lever.

Which is actually a factory option for the Getrag. I'm sure, had you bothered to ask Ted or Richard they could have explained this, or indeed, let you get a closer look at the car. As an organiser of motorshow stands/exhibitions, I can assure you that roping off the cars has far more to do with Health and Safety that keeping the public off the cars. It's only Fewwawi who usually feel that the general hoi-poloi have no place putting their grubby mits on the products

Some may remember my factory built GTR, it was displayed on the Ultima stand at the Donnington show and was disected into three sections so the public could look at all aspects. First, I was a bit apprehensive when seeing it was not roped off and the public putting their hands in the engine bay etc.
In the end, I was quite happy that the motor-interested public got a good look at these fine cars.
For a small operation, the factory people perform well in promoting. I guess we do the same when we get together for group events too. I love the hell out of the young kids asking questions -- future owners, I hope.

Interesting discussion. I do belive Ultima at one time had an open stand and I remember discussing with Ted last year. They would be happy to have open but with a show as large as Autocar the cars would either be destroyed or dismantled. They are just not big enough to waste a car in this manner. Even at smaller show thay have to bolt most things down. It is a shame but a fact of life that Joe Public has little respect for displays at shows.
On the subject of trim. I have not as yet seen any car that I have not been critical of some aspect (Including the most expensive) the great thing about the Ultima is that you can add your own modifications to improve the car in your own eyes. Its one good reason for going to the show to see what can be done. My own engine was once described as 'bling bling' for having all its shiny bits (well it was a clasic car enthusiast)
