speedo face off
Discussion
Hello all,
Speedo needle now caught on small screw (permanently shows 45mph), tacho (miles) sticks all the time on 10s turnover, oil light glass fallen out (due to tapping) and now reset button fecked due to continual pressing.
Can I take the aluminium surround (and hence glass cover) off without breaking/damaging it?
Cheers

Yes you can, Although the speedy dial is a budget product which is swaged not screwed on.
Prising the face off is painstaking to make sure its replaceable, but it is replaceable, and calibrating in situ gives you a decent reading all the time, so if you're careful its well worth it.
Can you explain a bit further please?Prising the face off is painstaking to make sure its replaceable, but it is replaceable, and calibrating in situ gives you a decent reading all the time, so if you're careful its well worth it.
What's the best method for attacking it with care?
Also did you mean speedo dial?
Cheers

Old fashoined dials used to be screwed or bayonetted on, so removable and replaceable, but the TVR dial is a cheapy.
I took a hour or so on my dial gently going all the way around levering up the aluminium, so as not to break it. After a few minutes of doing this the aluminium surround will rotate around as there is nothing to stop it. Unfortunately this will not free it as there is a ridge it is compressed around so you have to keep going. Eventually it will come right off. You can then pull the needle of the stem and put it back on anywhere you like. I used a latop to make it show exactly what the electronic temp showed. Mine now mirror each other.
The two big disasters you are looking to avoid is levering too much causing the ring to get a crease, or the fatigue of the aluminium causing a crack. Both would then be glue jobs I guess.
Once I'd sorted my dial I put the aluminium back on and gently squeezed it till it clamped the glass.
oop no I meant temp gauge
