I have recently bought a 55reg 44,000 mile 2.2d sport X-type but have notised that sometimes when I put my foot down from about 2000rpm that the cluth appears to slip as the rev's rise really quicky upto about 3000rpm. Has anyone else experianced this? is it normal? The gaurage I bought it from believes the clutch is fine....

Thanks Scott

Of course it's not normal. Even though the 2.2D has massive amounts of mid range tourque the clutch should be able to cope however you drive it.

As a general guide if the clutch is biting right at the top of the pedal travel, or you can provoke slip by just tapping the the pedal when on full throttle the friction plate is worn or the sprung plate is either weak or broken. If the clutch bites in the normal position but still slips the chances are the friction plate is contaminated with oil from a leaking seal.

If it's under warranty take it back. If not get it fixed as soon as you can. The more miles you drive with it slipping the more likley you are to do damage to the flywheel through slipping or the oil seals through overheating, and you'll have less of a case for complaint too. If it fails completely - which it could do without warning - you'll be stranded with a mahoosive recovery bill too.

Are you sure its clutch slip & not wheel spin? My 2.2d struggles to get its power down even on dry roads sometimes such is the massive amount of torque going through the front tyres. Also, the engine is electronically limited until in 3rd gear so thats when the symptoms are worse. I get the orange traction control light flashing on mine when it wheelspins.

No it's not wheelspin.. I was wondering if it's that I am not used to a dual mass flywheel car? today it was doing it really badly 1000rpm without almost any forward motion.. but the strange thing is that the revs don't drop back down the car just accerlerates until the wheel match the engine speed and then the revs start to build again.. its like driving an automatic is the best I can discribe it as. The thing is it's intermitant and is driving me mad................

Just bought a 2.2d and had the sanme problem. Previous owner was caravan nut and swapped for a landrover. New clutch and flywheel fitted under warranty, now perfect again.

Engine and gearbox a joy to use.

Dealer very good fixed without any quibble.

My GF used up a clutch on a 2.2 X-Type in under 10,000 miles.

I have done a clutch on a X-type before it had even been registered. When they where using the AP clutches they could fail at pretty much any time

Think there is some overlap here between a sudden failure & gradual wear & tear.
