Our 6 year old now has a dead Goldfish through an unfortunate accident. This was no fault of his ( or ours ), & he doesn't yet know. He will be horrified if he finds out, he loved the bleedin' thing.

How can we quickly get a replacement lookalike in before he notices..., given that it's gone ten on a Saturday eve????

HELP.....

Just tell him it's gone on holiday, until you can get a replacement.

Just be honest with him. Tell him its died and take him to get another one.

For my sixth birthday I got 2 guinea pigs.
The day after my sixth birthday the cat hooked both of them out of their run and ate them. Mum told me and then we went and got some more whils dad beefed up the hutch.
Sure I was upset for a bit, but you need to learn about death sooner or later.

I'm sure it was painful at the time, but even so, rofl

Break into your local pet store.

But be careful, if you get arrested, your son won't have a daddy for a while either.

Your OH could always say that you've gone on holiday with the fish mind.

Wrap it in foil, add herbs, slice of lemon and white wine. Bake for 20 mins.

This is very true.

Explain to the boy that Goldie has shuffled off this mortal coil and gone to join the choir invisibule.

You could also get the lad to assist you in the autopsy, in order to establish the exact cause of death. Watch a couple of episodes of "CSI", or even "Quincy M.E." for inspiration. You don't need no fancy lab or mortuary, just do it on the chopping board in the kitchen. You'll need quite a small knife though.

Think of it as edutainment. He'll thank you for it. Eventually.

Yeah, I agree. Age 6 is just about the earliest time to start introducing the idea of mortality. He'll handle it better than you think, as long as the adults don't have a freaky wobbler. If the 'grown-ups' are fairly calm and matter-of -fact, then it'll be fine.

Beautifully descriptive yet succinct!

As for the lack of goldfish, you can either tell him it's snuffed it, or has gone to goldfish heaven (while you're at it despatch Santa Claus as well) - or put a Del Monte peach slice in the tank and hope he doesn't look too closely.

Nail it to a perch and tell him it's restin' 'cos it's tired and shagged out after a long squawk...

My brother-in-law is a big Fish and animal lover and they have animals everywhere, in the house and garden. Anyway he has a pond with koi carp and other fishy type things. Recently he had a new, larger pond made; took ages to dig it out and get it all ready, anyway he finally got it all finished and transferred his fish into the new pond.

The next day when he got home from work he found that his prize fish (that he'd had for 20 odd years) had somehow 'beached' itself on the garden whilst at the same time the pet rabbit had fallen in the pond, both had 'drowned' (or whatever fish do out of water).

He was very upset and wasn't amused that everyone else found it so funny...
