It will come down to the final race again, both drivers will cross the line exactly at the same time and like other examples of "sports entertainment" the title will be decided by a hell in a cell cage match smile

If Jenson keeps his cool the title is his. A good job done today he recovered from a bad place.

If jenson is not champion it would be the most monumental fk up in the history of anyone ever. I do get the feeling though that unless he pulls some impressive performances out the bag certain people will have negative views on his championship. There will be people who think he's not worthy etc, but in reality he won more races than anyone else and if the rules had changed to most wins he'd be champion already.

If he doesn't manage to somehow fk it up, then I will be very happy for him.

People have short memories and sadly would rather someone have a bad start to the season the finish in flying style rather than be dominant for the first few races then go off the boil a bit.

Button hasn't helped himself over the past few races but would still be good to see him win cause ultimately I think he deserves it. Hopefully others will still appreciate him as a worthy champion.

The only people who would not agree would do so out of spiteful ignorance or blind allegiance to a rival...............

Absolutely. Button may have struggled for pace in some of the later races of the season, but he's made very few driver errors and has driven superbly for pretty much the whole season. The early races he was in a class of his own and lets face it, the points paint a picture. He's on top for a good reason, he deserves to win this year's WDC.

Button is an excellent driver, he's not had an immaculate season, but he's won 3 times as many races as anyone else and he hasn't made any complete screw ups. He'll be as worthy a champion as anyone else has ever been. Let's face it, if he'd run away and won it by halfway, then everyone would be saying it was the car being so dominant, but he has had to battle and dig deep and face an internal fight.

That is what makes a true champion. If he wins it, it'll be well deserved. It's been a wierd season, but that has made it more rather than less difficult.

Let's face it, 2 months before the season started, would anyone have given him a chance of even being on the grid? Let alone being the potential WDC.

If he wins it, he deserves it. I hope he does, even though I have a lot of time for Barrichello and would love to see him win the championship after having been hamstrung at Ferrari for so long.

If he does it, it will be a brilliant world champion. He got lots of early wins, baking lots of points. Then drove with real intelligence, not pushing his car too much but doing enough to keep the championship- and making all his competitiors work really hard to stay within reach.

Its a clever drive- the sort of thing Prost would do (or, dare I say it Fangio, who would do just enough to win, but never put him or the car in a compromised position). Its very different style to Hamilton, who will give 100% whether he's behind or out front, and therefore not as dramatic, but he will be a very worthy champion..

..Of course, it might mean Hamilton gets 2nd for the sports personality of the year again...!

And finally, to have different british drivers with consecutive world championships is great news. Here's to a third consecutive championship in 2010

So Hamilton is Senna, and Jenson is Prost? Discuss.

Aaaggghhh. I hate it when people just say "discuss".....

I find trying to compare drivers from different era's a pointless excercise. You can't do it in any meaningful way. Prost and Senna were both great drivers in their own way. Hamilton and Button are extremely good, but neither falls into the "all time great" category yet.

Hamilton has some of the hall marks that Senna did and he freely admits to emulating him, but that's as far as the comparison can go. Unless you can put both drivers at their prime in identical cars and send them off to race, then comparisons are nothing more than pub talk.

The season's not over yet. Button could drive brilliantly in the final three races and demonstrate that he's a worthy champion.
As of today, in his last 7 races he has had no mechanical failures, yet he has only once finished in the top 4, and that was on a day when his 37 year-old teammate who may lose his job after the season, in an identical car, clearly had the better of him. Not an imperious display.
If he wins this year, he'll be champion. Sure, that's a fact.
Most people agree that, last year, both Massa and Hamilton deserved to be WDC. If it is possible to have a season in which more than one driver deserves to be WDC, then it has to be possible to have a season in which none deserves to be.
If Button were to win one of the last three races in convincing fashion, as he won several earlier in the year, then there will be no room for doubt. Were he to continue to limp along, nursing his lead, watching his mirrors and benefiting too much from the mistakes of others, then one would be entitled to consider this year's champion to be less deserving than many others have been.

The driver who finishes the season with most points deserves to be champion, it doesn't matter if he racked up the points at the start, middle or end of the season.

At this stage in the season it is better for him to bring the car home in mid points scoring positions and secure the WDC for himself and the manufacturers title for his team than to try to impress armchair critics and bin the car in an effort to win the race and end up scoring no points.

Of course neither of these statements is true. If such an odd view was possible, then last year was one were no-one deserved to be Champion.

Hamilton scraped through despite a rash of stupid mistakes and Massa was in it at the end only because of that and his own and team's errors.

Flemke - You're normally right on the mark with your comments but this time you've shot well wide of it. Champions do not become worthy by giving a stunning drive in the last three races of the season, it's a consistent performance over the course of the year. Jenson has done that this year, he bagged ponts by the bucket-load when things were going well early on and has limited the damage since then. In Monza, far from Barricello "Clearly having the better of him" in the race I saw, the two were very evenly matched. But it was in three laps in Singapore when he showed his class again. Having had his strategy compromised by the safety car, he put in three blinding laps to leap frog not just Kovy, but his team mate as well. If there is one area where Jenson has suffered in the recent races it's his qualifying performance. Come the races, he's right on the pace.

I do not understand how anyone can finish a season in the cauldron of F1 with more points than his rivals and not be a worthy champion.

Button is having to content with his team mate trying to take points off him. Another recent champion had the luxury of his team mate taking points from other people but not from him. Ironically, it's the same team mate.

It's certainly been an entertaining fight when it looked as though it Jenson would walk away with it early on. I know what I'd prefer to see.

Does the fact that he has to fight for it make it any less worthy? Absolutely not!

Anyone who disagrees just ask who else would deserve it more?
Is Vettel a more worthy winner, or perhaps Webber?
The only credible claim to being a more worthy winner is his teammate who is taking the fight to him - FANTASTIC and whoever wins will be worthy!

If rumours are true and Rubi is out for next year then as much as I'd like to see Jenson win as a Brit it would be a fitting end to a great career and with Mercedes pumping more support into Brawn for 2010 who's to say they won't give Jenson every chance next year.

Jenson's points per race this season:
10 5 6 10 10 10 10 3 4 2 2 - 8 4
I see two clearly delineated parts of the season ... WINNER and then average - how is that consistent?

I too would like to see him champion if he reasserts himself as the clear class of the field in the last races available.
