is essex a fun place to live?

i may start a job soon working near Basildon. It's too far to commute from where i currently live so i'm considering relocating.
so does anyone here live in the essex area? preferably within 30-40 mins from basildon..? is it a fun place to live? i'm looking for somewhere with the following:
- good sports facilities (gym, squash, swimming pool, football)
- nice pubs but also a decent nightlife
- good restaurants
- plenty of shops
I'm trying to avoid living in london if i can help it, but am i likely to find a town/city in essex which can cater to all of the above?

Leigh-on-Sea seems to be a reasonably highly-regarded place amongst many localities which are not.

i'm looking to flat or house share with 2 or 3 people, and rent of upto 500/month including bills. i'm not fussy about a house so long as it's reasonably clean and i can get sky sports in... i'm more interested in making sure the surrounding area is nice and has good ammenities.Laindon is a big council estate as per basildon

I've got a few friends who live in chelmsford, nightlife, shops and restaurants are all dire. They jump on the train to london for nights and and shopping. Apparently the gyms alright though!so does anyone here live in the essex area? preferably within 30-40 mins from basildon..? is it a fun place to live? i'm looking for somewhere with the following:

Leigh on Sea is good fun, 20 mins on train
Chelmo is dull.

Shenfield, not much of a night life, Hollands and Lot75 something are pretty gash, trying to be trendy but the clientel mess that one up.
Houses are nice, enough food shops, 4 haridressers, Shenfiled Tandoori is good, taste of china has gone down hill after a new chef but the Happy Garden delivers good chinese.
It is expensive thanks to its route in to London although the trains are pretty shocking, always late, at least 2 major delays a week and always rammed and expensive.
Gym wise, i think there is one in Warley, about 10 minute drive.
Brentwood is only 5 mins up the road where the night live is pretty ste, when Police have to remove people from a burning club because they paid money to get it and they want to make the most of it, you know the type of people who will be drinking there.
Do your drinking in London, living out of London.
To be fair, after working in Basvegas, you will be quite happy getting to your house in Basra.
