Kids in the Quiet Carriage

I want to find out if its me being an uptight old git or if I am in the right....
Travelling back from Devon yesterday evening on a packed train, looking at a 2.5 hour trip to Paddington. I deliberately booked in advance onto the "quiet carriage", no mobiles, no loud noise etc. All is good until two sets of parents get on with two 2-4 year old (no idea how old they actually were) kids who are instantly making noise - as kids do.
This was instantly irritating to everyone else in the carriage - why on earth get on the "quiet" carriage with 2 kids?? A woman turned round and asked them if they could keep the noise down to be told "they're kids, what do you expect?" (erm....for you to have the courtesy to sit in one of the non quiet carriages maybe?). The father of one of the kids basically told her to get stuffed.
There were other seats on the train they could have sat at. They compounded the situation by then sitting together as a group - which of course meant the 2 kids were playing with one another = more noise. I dont have any problem with kids, I just thought the parents were extremely selfish. Why do some parents seem to think everyone else is as happy as they are to put up with the negative parts of having kids around? Or am I just a grumpy old git?

Absolutely, like I say, I have no problem with kids per se. My problem was with the arrogance of the parents last night. They made absolutely no attempt to encourage their kids to be quiet - even just for appearances sake.However annoying, kids are kids.

I was on a quiet carriage a while back and a woman got on with a baby which immediately started crying loudly. She did attempt to quieten it down, but it didn't work. Someone must have complained because after a few minutes the train manager came and asked her to move to another carriage.
If my seven year old daughter was in that carriage, you wouldn't have heard a peep out of her. This "Kids will be kids" b
ks gets on my bloody nerves. She has been brought up to be quiet and respectful around other people. Shame the same can't be said for vast numbers of other children.

Well thats what I found most irritating/bemusing. There was no attempt to keep their kids quiet when they got on and their attitude after being asked to keep the noise down was one of "kids will be kids, we cant tell them to be quiet" The father said that the quiet carriage was only to do with mobile phones, which was a mornic thing to say really. Even after they'd been asked they made no attempt to control their kids and seemed to think eveyone else found their kids squealing as endearing as they did.ks gets on my bloody nerves. She has been brought up to be quiet and respectful around other people. Shame the same can't be said for vast numbers of other children.The fact that they appeared extremely "right on" parents (in their 40's dressed like 21 year olds) kids named Dimitri & Tai, only made them more irritating for me, but I accept thats my prejudice at play there....

Really? I saw her the other day kick an old man to the floor and call him a cheap old ks gets on my bloody nerves. She has been brought up to be quiet and respectful around other people. Shame the same can't be said for vast numbers of other children.I was on a train from Glasgow to Birmingham when a dad and his young daughter got on. Dad immediately gets out a portable DVD player and puts on the Spongebob movie. It was playing out through the speakers for an hour and a half and people were looking quite pissed off. When the film ended there was a moment of dread when he took another DVD out of the case, only this time he took out a pair of headphones too and put them on his daughter!

Luckily I had my Ipod which largely (but not entirely) drowned out the noise but I couldn't get over how selfish some people are. When I listen to my music I am consious about whether others can hear it too and make sure I dont play it too loudly. Unfortunately, this isn't the only time this sort of thing has happened and it seems that parents would rather ruin the lives of everyone else just so that their little darlings are happy.
I'm flying to Spain on Wed but not without my noise cancelling headphones and earplugs!!!
