Hi, I just got my tax renewal reminder in the post. It's £215 for a year, or £118 for 6 months. I normally always go for a year, but this time, I'm thinking to go for 6 months, in order to spread the costs a bit, as my car insurance, MOT and tax all fall in the same month.

What I can't seem to find a definitive answer to, is when does the tax cost go up? In other words, what will my tax be in March 2010 if I go for 6 months now? Again the same (£215/£118) or will it have gone up (to £400-something) by then?

Thanks guys.

They charge 10% extra to tax every 6 months

That is infact 20% p/a then you consider that you are re-taxing in 6 months time

A bit of a no brainer even with out the tax going up

Surely if it's 10% now and 10% in 6 months, it's still 10% per annum?

the idea was to go back buying a full year's tax in 6 months time, and that way then permanently have MOT and insurance in september, and tax in march, so as not to have everything whack me at the same time, like now.

i was just trying to figure out if i'd be shooting myself in the foot, and if, come march, the full year road tax had gone up to £400-something, then obviously, i will have achieved nothing...

but i just checked it, and i don't think the road tax for my car will be going up that much next year, instead i think it will go up to £245 (band K) as the car is registered before 2006, but has high emissions.

anyway, i've ordered a 6-month tax disc, 'cause i figured, even if it does go up, i'm still moving one of these costs away from the same month, so it should still be better.

I might be wrong but I think the road tax goes up to £400+ for K band cars from April 2011. I think they charge on the basis of what the tax actually is in the month that you renew, not on a pro-rata basis looking forward.

Probably will have a change of government by then, so the rules and tax charge will probably all change anyway rolleyes
