Why do people think Audi/VW is a reliable brand
Discussion
My wife has had several Audis/VW she keeps them for 3 years on lease, ALL of them have had major issues, Cambelts going/major electrical faults, ABS, waterpumps going, steering columns, fuels pumps, corroding alloys, wiper motors going, bonnet mechanisms breaking, etc etc
She has had them serviced on schedule but each one has had thousands spent on repairs (on warranty luckily) yet none of them have ever got to 80k

I bought a year old Passat, the most I'd ever spent on a car. I was looking forward to VW reliability and service back up from the dealer.
Turned into the most unreliable piece of junk I've ever had. Compounded by the total arrogance and disdain of all at the dealership. To say they couldn't care less would be an understatement. Got rid (at a big loss..so much for good residuals) after 13 months.
Would never have a VW again. Some of their recent cars may be OK, I just wouldn't touch them on principle!

Possibly trading on past glories? My VW has been reliable/solid so far but I reckon it won't be as rattle free at 80k miles as my Honda S2000 was.
The Hilton Hotel chain does the same.
BMW advertise their cars as the Ultimate Driving Machine. Whichever way you look at it, that isn't the case.

historically they were better built ,but as cars have got mre complex and the bean counters have had their wicked way they seem to be just the same as any manufacturer.
i had three mk2 golf gti's and never had a serious problem with any of them. i have an r plate passat with 190k on the clock, but that is ready for scrapping now

The same could be said for any brand - I have had MANY cars from the VAG house and never really had any problems other than day to day stuff, I bought a CLK320 and ended up spending nearly £2k on it in 8 months, that doesnt make all Mercs unreliable.
Iam not saying they do not have issues, but there are also hundreds of thousands of happy customers.

oh brother, another VAG bashing thread....
If there was'nt anything to bash then fair enough, they used to be reliable for sure compared to their contempories, however I do believe the OP has a point, terrible things especially the newer stuff. Speak to a Snap-On diagnostics man & he'll confirm for sure !!!!!
I have been in a few older VW and Audi products and quite a few shed spec BMW's they all feel nicer places to sit and are much less rattly than Fords or Vauxhalls of a similar age. I think that is where a lot of opinion of reliability stems from.
In reality (IMO) many cars are reliable mechanically but when they do go it is expensive (Turbo, Cambelt, etc), or the mechanics that they employ in a main dealer that lots of people use are so inept they fix the wrong fault or fail to diagnose the actual cause. I remember a weak spot in one of my Foci was the fuel pump, it had 2 under warranty and the second went just after the warranty expired, I took the car to an indi and in 5 minutes he diagnosed the problem as a loose wire and not a broken fuel pump. Ford would have charged me £200 + for the job, it cost me £40 and that was because the car needed towing to the garage.

Years ago i had an 8v MK2 golf GTI, that was a piece of crap. Then i had a lupo GTI, in the two years of owning it I bought 2 tyres and thats it. Sailed through 2 mot's . Perfect little car. My current MK5 is the same, owned for 1.5 years and only cast me a service ,MOT ,Tax and fuel. Never misses a beat. Alot of my friends have had VW's with not so much as a problem with them. Good cars in my opinion.
We had a SEAT Ibiza, serviced by the supplying dealer from new, miserably fail its MOT at 4yrs/34K miles on several issues.
The worst thing is that they made me feel annoyed with myself for having it MOT'd at the dealership. They just used it as an excuse to scam money out of me. Spoke to SEAT UK and they couldn't give a toss - they think it's perfectly OK for such a relatively new and lightly used car to fail MOT.
