Hi All

Has anyone ever measured the thickness of the 2 plates in a brand new AP clutch and compared the thickness of the plates to some worn out ones? I just wondered how much the plates have to wear down by for the clutch to start slipping.

Regards
Simon

Having just stripped my engine and box down for soem essential work 10,000 miles after a new clutch, I'd be interested in this.

My plates are between 7-7.2 mm thick, when I enquired with TVR power they told me that new ones are approximately 8 mm.

Can you just buy the plates though?

I have a second hand clutch and the plates are 6.8mm thick. So they may have worn down by 1.2mm. Just wondered how far plates have to wear down for clutch to be u/s. Not sure if you can buy plates on their own but I'd take a wild guess at NO.

I think that, rather than slip, the problem is that you start to get down to the rivets and risk damaging the flywheel.

I intend to look at the possibility of relining the clutch - possibly with an improved material? - But haven't got around to it yet.

Trouble is, if the lining is worn out the chances are the fingers are on their last legs, so to speak.
The thickness should be measured to the rivet heads, should it not?

Might have an answer for you in the next week Simon.

The last two have lasted me 10K miles each.

As regards re-lining the clutch plates,i had mine done & have done over 10k miles on them without an issue.

I see a pattern emerging. Drag racing and clutch failure appear to be somewhat correlated..

Yes mate, didn't feel right after 12 runs at FT, and I reckon York Raceway's seen it off.

Fluid's on max, no bits in it, so suspect fingers again.

Ah...well!..........i knew a chap who worked at AP Leamington (who unfortunatly has retired now) who built the clutches there,he did them for me.However, this place looks ok :-www.autoandindustrial.co.uk (01462 834778).I dont know anyone who has had their clutch done there but they came recommended on here & they look as good as anybody.

Esso, cheers for that, do you happen to know what thickness they were relined to?

I was recommended this company too by a forum member who had his done there. They can also skim flywheel inter plates and fingers etc and prices seem quite reasonable.
