Ok, here's one for you eagle eyed PHers.

Everytime I see that "it's like a Golf, but not a golf" advert on TV, the 3rd one in I think when the guys are talking around the bonnet of a car exclaiming it has a DOHC, and one says "ahhh, like a Golf"....what's the car? Everytime I look at it I can't help thinking it is a Mk3 Golf (!!!), but surely it can't be?

So, what is it - please put my mind at rest! (it's a little modded, which makes it slightly more difficult).

Also, out of sheer geekiness - what is the car the that supposed road tester is driving? I'm inclined to say a Pug, but can't quite place it?

It's a Mk3 GTi 16v

ETA

I think that the road tester car is a 1-series, but I'm no more than 40% sure of it.

1 series - 11 secs in and you can see the swooping sill

A quick google reveals this:

http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/t/296473.aspx

It seems it is a Fiesta.

In the interior shot of the car being driven hard, the vents remind me of a mk1 focus. Not sure though.

nerd During that section where the blokes are looking into the engine bay, one chap says 'baffled sump, double overhead cam' and the other replies 'yeah, like a Golf'

Does any of the new Golf range have a baffled sump - the GTi perhaps?

Yeah, does look like it from the outside shot. The number plate is visible, assuming it's not a fake, can someone do a search? S100 SBG I think?

That was my thought as well, the wheels (well what you can see of them!) look like a BMW design as well.

i think the car that is refered to as a golf due to its DOHC was once a fiesta mk3 SI with a 1.6 16v engine in it.

Im trying to convince my mate who works in a Pug dealership to try and slip the "like a golf" line into one of his sales pitches but he is reluctant at that moment....probably as he has pug blinkers on whilst at work even though he is a VW fan haha.

The modded purple car is definitely a Mk3 Golf. The in car footage of a car on track I'm convinced is a Civic Type-R (because of the steering wheel and dash) although the rear exterior shot of that same car does look a bit more like a 1 series than a Civic?

Deffo a 1 series.

Drives just like a golf..... except with its rear wheels. Doesnt make much difference though does it.

They cut away too quickly from the "Drives like a golf ...." road tester to hear the final word of the sentence, ".... buggy"

Good old PH smile

So it was once a Mk3 fiesta then - (made amusingly to look like a Mk3 golf smile), and the 1 -series, I'd never spotted that but will look more intently next time!

Thanks PH world smile

Aren't virtually all sumps baffled to some extent? It's like when they mumble about overhead cams - barring the KA I can't think of any production car that's used push rods for the best part of 30 years.

The whole advert strikes me as a bit optimistic. Like when they're going on about handling like a Golf. Yes, the first ones and the most recent ones are quite good, but those in between were fairly comprehensively mullered by the 306 and later the Focus in that department.

Could be worse. It could be that bloody 'remember when you said you'd never buy a Renault?' ad. That surely will have persuaded people who'd never previously done so not to buy a Renault...

With the road tester part the interior shot is of a Civic (you can tell by the dash and the silver inserts in the seats), and the exterior is a 1 series. I really must get out more...
