Are the image burn in issues still there with the new plasmas?Im looking for a tv around 42 inches for the living room that i may occasionally use the XBOX on.Would i be better off with an LCD?

Absolutely fine, and just as impressive as you think/are convinced an LCD is.

Buying this new tv must be one of the most brain numbingly, frustrating things i've ever done.I've done so much looking, research online my head hurts, then i go into local electrical stores then my head hurts even more!Oh LCD is best for xbox,oh no it's not,oh yes it is!LCD tv,s last longer, then no they don't!Plasmas are better, plasmas use more power, then no they don't the power use fluctuates a lot on them and on 'average' works out roughly the same.Image burn isn't a problem now on Plasmas, then someone says it is??AAAAAhhhh!Im definetly Confused.com.So after a full 15 minutes speaking to a knowledgable salesman in PC world, yes,i know i've just used Pc world and knowledgable in the same sentence but he genuinely knew his stuff, well, until he dropped a clanger.
Bearing in mind i've spent an eternity trying to convince my other half to get a new TV,the chat with this guy was going great, until at the very end of the conversation just when i was ready to get the cash out of my pocket to get an LG 42 inch plasma (pq6000 model)he slips in that the life of plasma tv,s is around 3 and a half years! my missus' face dropped and all my working on her had frizzled out to bugger all!Now even though i had read the lifespan of new plasmas is reported to be around the 60,000 hours plus mark it was still enough to scupper all my hard work.As soon as we got home i started showing her all the lifespan comments i had read,i think i might have won her round a bit but you never know though, tomorrows another day!

speak to derestrictor or plotloss on here, nobody else in shops even some of the "experts" know as much.

Rumple - Panasonic 42G10 all the way, and with a 5 year warranty at independent resellers from today.
Remember 60K hours is to half brightness - not that the TV only works up until then, and now there's chatter the number could be up at 100K hours.
Either way, it's 8 years of average viewing time daily.
Tell the missus you've researched it to death, and to trust your decision.

The LG i was looking at i was managing to find fantastic reviews, and prices for it all over the net, best price £470!!!Can't be bad for a 42 plasma,pc world was £579 though.Tried to haggle a bit with my head full of online prices but they weren't having it!:-)I'll look into the Panny!

If longevity is a worry (which it shouldn't be), go to John Lewis and get a 'free' 5 year guarantee. Though I would also echo the comment about going to Digital Direct for second-to-none service...

ETA why you'd go to PC World and expect a competitve price for a telly anything is beyond me smile

people need to stop and think a little here....a few posts on here of late seem to suggest that plasmas get image burn if you put an xbox in the same room as the TV....now we hear that the TV is dead after 3 years.

So you think they would be made if it were that bad?

If ANY salesman told me what i was about to buy would not last 3 years i'd regard him as a bit of an idiot (unless he was wearing a cap and i was buying a Big Mac off him)

I bought the cheapest 42inch plasma I could 8 years ago (a daewoo £2500!!), its still going strong, dont worry about them wearing out etc & screen burn isnt usually an issue anymore either, panic ye not.

Now bought serveral more without any issues (always from derestrictor - advice & service 2nd to none)

Pc world obviously isn't my first choice for anything lol,but it's just i saw they were selling a Samsung 42 inch online for £420!Otherwise i wouldn't even have went there, plus they're only 5 miles away.Longevity isn't really a concern either it was just a topic of conversation that cropped up with the salesman.Only reason i went to any 'real world' shops was to show my missus that 42 inch wasn't really that big!

The new G10 series panasonic plasmas have rated lifespan to half brightness
(this is the point where you can no longer compensate for the aging of the panel)
of 100,000 hours now asuming you use the set 8 hours a day then theoretically thats 35 years!!
so that's the lifespan taken care of.

Screenburn is another red herring with Panasonic Plasmas if the set is correctly set up it simply wont happen (avoid at all costs the "Dynamic" picture mode) the G10s have a dedicated Game mode
which reduces the Contrast,Brightness and Colour settings and more importantly switches off all
of the "picture" enhancements in doing this it virtually guarantees virtually Zero input lag.

I've been selling Tvs for over 15 years and some of the Cr@p you hear spouted about Plasma TVs
have me raging away inside.

It's interesting that in the shop I work in every shop floor staff member has a plasma as his primary Living room TV, I have a three year old Pioneer 50" and it gets thrashed for 8 hours everyday with all three games consoles and it never misses a beat.

Just get infront of a well set up G10 and all LCDs pale in comparison there is no better value
set.

And one last point, if you have to pause something on it be it a Game or Film etc
just turn the set off, the game will still be paused
