Have had a search round and can't find the answer to this one.
Q: What's the most amount of seasons a driver has been in F1 before winning his first championship?
Just wondering if this could be a record for Button this year.
If my memory serves me correct this is Buttons tenth season in F1.
I've spelt the title of the thread wrong!

I don't know the answer, but Mansell was 12.
Mario Andretti was 10.
Eta: actually, I misread your question. Mansell had already been in F1 for 12 years, so won WDC in his 13th. Also,'78 was 10 years after Andretti's first F1 race, although in some seasons he had run a partial schedule, or even none at all. Therefore you could say that he won in his 11th season, or maybe it was his 4th!

I must be bored - I just checked.
Mansell is the most at 12 - debut in 1980, championship in 1992, second place is Andretti on ten, debut in 68 and the championship in 1978, third is Hakinnen on 7, Raikkonen, Rindt and Hawthorn tied for 4th place on 6 years.
Button would take third if he wins this year at 9 - and as has been said Barichello will be the most at 16 should he win it.
