Engine on the dyno

Well it all went great.
It was first bedded in using a program on the dyno that brings the revs up, loads the engine then drops the revs again. This takes about 20 minutes.
We then did a number of pulls interspersed with adjustments to timing, jets and tappet adjustments.
In all we completed 11 full pulls and used 10 gallons of petrol.

It not so much tails off as flattens out. It peaks at 5500 but is still producing the same power at 6000 as it was at 5000. Peter Knight was surprised that it did not fall straight off after the peak. It also has a strange dip at 5200 which was present in every run but we could not find a reason for it. Perhaps it’s some sort of harmonic.
The cam is 230/230 @ .050, 110 106. Hydraulic roller.

The jetting for the Holley 800 was primary 71 secondary 85 out the box.
We finished at primary 67 secondary 71.

I think your in line for some serious fun!!!
I took my engine to get dyno'd they spent all day on it (9-6) by the time they finished they had pulled an extra 100 hp out of it and made it run better than ever before. A testiment to their skills (and shows what a tosser my engine builder was!!!)
Did the first and last pull differ greatly?
What kind of time was spent on the dyno to reach these figures?
Who did you have build the beast? and lastly.......
What kind of power difference did changing the jets make.

I left the engine with Peter at 7.30 then went over to the factory and spent a load of dosh. Got back at about 11 and they were waiting for me before they started. Finished about 4.30.
In the proper pulls we only gained about 38hp but Peter had made some adjustments before the first real pull. Over all the pulls we gained more than just power, the engine now sounds really sweet compared to when we started.
I built the beast myself. I bought the block and had it machined. Everything else on the engine I specified and bought new.
As above the gain was only 38hp but we changed the jets 3 times. Peter was trying to correct the fall off of power at the top end but the Holly carb is not sophisticated enough to make those adjustments. The A/F ratio was going off at the top end which you can only correct by having the carb custom tuned/rebuilt/modified. Peter also thinks a slightly more radical cam my make a difference. The cam I have is described as having a ‘Rough idle’ but it was ticking over as sweet as you like at 900RPM so maybe it would take bigger.

Can you give us some of the spec on your engine ?
I am toying with the idea of building my own engine but I'm a little worried that I'll miss some of the little things that turn out to be very important when putting these things together.
As I read more small block books I find more and more little tips and tricks that turn out to be essential

The guys on this forum are real experts and provided me with help and encouragement to build this engine.
The moderator, and probably the most knowledgeable there, Grumpyvette, has quoted my engine as an example of how the right combination of parts can produce an almost flat torque curve. He, and others, also seem impressed that this power can come from a small duration cam.
I always intended to try and make plenty of power but not at the expense of road manners. I thought I might have gone too far with the cam as it is described as having a ‘Rough Idle’. As it turns out it just whirrs like a sewing machine on a 900RPM tickover.
So Crazy, yes I am chuffed with it.

I've read HOW TO BUILD MAX PERFORMANCE CHEVY SMALL BLOCKS ON A BUDGET by DAVID VIZARD and JOHN LINGENFELTER on modifying small-block chevy engines.
I've also got a 'How to build Small block Chevy' book but I think it's different to the one you listed.
I am also registered on Chevytalk and have found it very useful, just need to start asking a few questions now I have some base knowledge on these engines.
My worry with building my own engine is getting all the components to match correctly as I plan on using a stroker kit much like yourself. It's going to take me some time to make sure my rods, crank, pistons all match and give me the correct CR etc
Another option I am considering is buying a shortblock and adding my own heads, manifold etc as I would ideally like to go down the fuel injection route.
Look forward to hearing it rumble some time soon
