Maserati - 4200 - Buy tips Required
Discussion
I'm currently looking for a suitable replacement for my trusty E39 M5.
I've always hankered after a Maserati 4200. Good looking, relatively under stated, Ferrari power, 4 seats , GT tourer.
But there has got to be a reason why cars that cost £60+ 5 years ago, with less than 40K miles and FSH are going for less than £20K.
What do I not know about these cars that I should before I spend my hard earned cash buying an Italian Stallion?
Regards
Dave

I have a friend who has an immaculate Mass420, bought from new. He recently approached the same dealer who had a Ferrari he was thinking of swapping it for. The dealer offered......£16K!!!!I've always hankered after a Maserati 4200. Good looking, relatively under stated, Ferrari power, 4 seats , GT tourer.

He turned it down obviously.
His car I kid you not is fantastic, no mechanical problems, still looks & drives like brand new. No idea why the values on these have dropped so far but they are a sure fire bargain, I would have one in an instant.
"perceived" reliablilty within the trade and joe public is what keeps the prices down on these cars.
It is true that the clutches dont last long (figure on between 10 and 30k miles dependant on driving style) and you get the odd F1 pump failure, but the rest of the car is robust....in fact the engine is pretty bomb proof.
I ran an '02 car for nearly 3 years with few issues. In fact apart from routine servicing at £250 a year from my local indy all it needed was a new clutch at £1200....certainly more reliable than the DB7 Vantage I had before it and the XKR I had before that.
If you like it, buy it, you wont regret it. Also go and check out http://www.maseratiforum.co.uk/ as theres loads of helpful owners and info on there

£750 for a service according to a friend who has just sold his. Another has a 3200GT with shot dampers which are over £2k a set to replace. You get the picture. Personally, they always remind me of a Jag in terms of styling and aren't really good looking enough to get the blood stirring. Very hard ride too.

Loads of people spouting nonsense about things they know nothing about. Ph at its best. The key to a healthy and hence cheap to own and run maser from what i understand is that you should actually use it rather than treating it as a garage queen leaving it locked in the garage for 6 months out of the year.
Other than that fairly bullet proof and servicing at an indy is reasonable.

have to say that my 3200 scared the cr#p out of me at first what with electrics that seem to have a mind of their own ("check engine" flashing in red in particular!) and a throttle potentiometer (did i spell that right?!) that kept needing a reset. 6 months on and with near everyday use plus the addition of a tubi exhaust and just plain getting used to it, i absolutely love the thing and it never fails to bring smile to my face. Plus strangely a few of those niggles, such as the potentio thingio just disappeared...
As for looks i think it's stunning and so seemingly do a lot of other people too, particularly women (which is nice). It is rather understated and there in i think is the secret to its visual appeal. With the tubi it sounds amazing and i'm afraid to anyone who says "don't do it" i'd have to say they probably have no soul... ;-)

See from someone who has one the word is the more you use it the more reliable it is and bear in mind thats the 3200 which was lets be fair riddled with faults most of which were rectified in the 4200.As for looks i think it's stunning and so seemingly do a lot of other people too, particularly women (which is nice). but make sure you get an inspection done before purchase. Or it could cost you loads if you get a dodgy one. Like my old 4200 did!
