Easy Math Question

[B16 NFW]

Right, a family friend has one of those bloody infuriating thinking games for the Nintendo DS and I need your help.

You have a 4 flower beds, all round and the radius is 10 meters (in red). The question is what is the area (in blue) between the four flower beds.

A little diagram below.



Help is greatly appreciated as its driving me crazy.

85.84 sq metres.

Draw imaginary square around each circle.

Area of square = 20m x 20m

Area of circle = pi x 10^2

Take the area of the circle from the area of the square.

If the radius of the circle is 10m ,then it sits in a box of 400 sq m.

area of the circle is Pi X r squared = 3.14159x10x10 = 314.15 sq m

Area of box outside circle is 85.85 sq M

After some (potentially) dodgy mental arithmetic I get 90M2

Bit in the middle is equivalent to the area of a square minus the area of the circle.

Area of square = 400m2

Area of circle = 3.14159.... x 10squared=314.159m2

400 - 314.159=85.841m2

See, I did remember something from school.

So it was 'What is the area of the square formed by joining the centre of the four circles'?
