Hi, does anyone know of a BEC specialist/mechanic ideally in the Middlesex area? I have some work that needs to be done to my R1 engined MNR and I dont have the time/tools/knowledge to perform the work currently.

Andy Bates AB Performance is near Ipswich, not Middlesex I know but he can do most things on an R1 car. Its a 5 hour round trip for me but he knows his stuff.

What is it you want to do ?

Most jobs are pretty straightforward on a Bec.

PDQ in Taplow near Maidenhead are about the nearest I can think of quickly.

Another vote here for Andy Bates at AB Performance, he looks after us RGBers in the paddock and what he doesn't know about BECs isn't worth knowing. I'm one of his most loyal customers (which means I've had more crashes and mechanical failures than anyone else this season biggrin )

Thanks guys, will give PDQ a call as I have a drive/prop issue but also require a rolling road tune, so ideal.

I took my Locoblade to PDQ and would definitely recommend them again. The guy explained what he was doing and why as he went along with the end result of me having a better power/torque curve. OK there wasn't too much play he could do with mine as it is carb'd but he ironed out one massive flat spot I had from it running too rich.

I think the prop has broken(slight knocking when moving the car and no drive although engine and box seem fine), will get in the garage locally to have a look, I see that MNR sell replacements.

Erm, I think you'd know if the prop broke. It will usually happen under load and tends to cause a fair amount of damage, sometimes including fire and almost always soiled pants.

If you're not comfortable mechanically, get it checked locally first... or just get the best knowledge available and go to see Andy as suggested.

By the way MNR are only resellers of propshafts in case you weren't aware.

As Tim says doesn't sound like prop failure. Could be anything from your description really from prop centre bearing, prop UJ joint about to fail, diff problem, drive shaft/CV/tripode problem.

Most of these should be fixable by any competent mechanic and parts available from a motor factor or local prop refurbisher.

No drive actually makes me think its a gearbox/clutch issue.

It could be the prop though. Mine was, as it had ripped all the splines off the centre joint. You could slecet all the gears and even rev the engine, but had no drive what so ever. I still don't know how I managed that, as even the prop guys had never seen it happen before. And certainly not with a BEC.

For those who gave a response or are just interested... It turned out to be a simple problem of the prop not actually being connected to the reverse box! Just a case of taking off the center console and re attaching the bolts (with lock tight!). Just need a couple of other minor mods and then for the rolling road session Thanks to a mate who came over and gave me a hand- saved lots of time.

Where is the sun!
