pay per drive

Just read a good article on here about budget racing (Locost, Mini, historic saloons etc). Does anybody know of anybody offering pay-per-drive options in these or any similar budget series?

I've done a bit of motorbike racing where I've sorted my own licence and clothing and registered for a championship and paid race entry, and then another racer has stuck a spare bike in their van and let me use it for a fee, with their mechanic taking care of it, and I've only had to worry about tyres and petrol.

Obviously not so convenient with car racing due to transporting it to the tracks, but does anybody know of anybody hiring out drives at the lower budget end of car racing?

The max5 price is a good guide, I doubt you could get anything cheaper... we'd charge about that plus a deal on tyres as we run slicks to hire the Tasmin. and there isnt much profit on that..

dont forget your entry fees on top of that.

Do you have a budget idea per race? This will help identify realistically which championships you could enter and what kind of car you could be racing. Most championships will have someone that is prepared to hire you a car though... I've hired out my BMW E30's in the past in the Kumho BMWs and Pre93 series plus I'm thinking of doing the same with my E36 M3 in 2010 in either Kumho BMWs, TTRS, Pre93 or similar.

Thanks very much for all that. That'll give me a nice bit of research to dream a few evenings away with. Somebody asked about budget - I haven't even got that far yet, I just want to get an idea of the cheapest way to get a weekend's racing and then see if I could maybe afford to do a couple of weekends next season – ideally Brands and Silverstone. It looks like for 2 days racing it’s going to be getting on for £2k with car hire, race entry fees and travel etc, and then there’s the other stuff:

Anybody know if 750motorclub are likely to do a deal on registration and membership fees if it’s just for a one-off race?

And how much the necessary race licence costs nowadays? My last one (novice clubmans?) expired about 12 years ago (I only did a total of about 5 meetings spread over 2 or 3 years - elva courier in historic sportscars) so I don’t know if I’d have to do the training day again. Or if they’d make an allowance for holding an ACU licence?

Hopefully see some of you on track next season.

Steve is heavily involved with the BARC run Westfield series and they have some arrive and drive bits available I think including on a race by race basis.

I got a licence again this year after 7 years away. You will need to do the written part of the test only, cost me £50.

My Nat.B licence ran out at the end of 2002, and when I spoke to MSA they said I would have to do the whole course again...

Really ? I was sulking at having to do the written part ! Went up to Brands, the guys there knew it was a standard thing for people getting a licence after a few years away.
The only difference between us is mine WAS a Nat.A. I would ask to speak to someone else at MSA first.

The written test is about as challenging as remembering your own name.

If I can get 100%, anyone can - in fact, I think all the guys who did the ARDS test with me passed the written part with 100%.

Getting back on topic - I've always wondered - if you bin one of their cars, who pays? 500-750 quid per race is very cheap considering replacement costs of race cars are usually 5-figures!

Unless you have a deal, or pay for insurance, I'm pretty sure they'll repair the car and send you that 5 figure bill

Repairs are the one thing that put me off arrive & drive. While I'd be happy to drive a car that looks bodge repaired to a safe level, teams, understandably want it presented in top condition.

• most* hire deals are done with insurance. Personally, I think you'd be pretty stupid not to take this option. You have no control of who may spin into you or take you out. Reshelling a car with a welded in cage is not cheap...
