Could you maybe get it through the cycle to work scheme? You could double your budget then and get something pretty nice. Others will probably tell me I'm talking balls but for a mountain bike for serious use I'd be looking to spend over £600. If it's just for light use then something like a Specialized Hardrock may be good.

I'm self employed and I don't think my tools and materials would fit on the bike smile 600 plus..hmm second hand maybe the way to go in that case..

You don't actually have to cycle to work.

Can't you set up the scheme for your own business? Would that work?

dont know much abt c2w so cant help there.

£400 isnt worth spending on a new bike really, you wil lget far better value for money, more robust components nad ultimately more fun on a second hand bikes. mountain bikers are notoriously bad at keeping bikes/components for long, easily succombing to a thing called "upgradeitus" so you should get some good kit for your money.

if you do go c2w and can spend more, up to £1000 will get you a very capable hardtail, its only worth going fuill suspension if you intend to spend over £1000. others may disagree but teh componnets are generally poor and bikes are full of areas where ocsts have been saved using poor quality parts to keep hte bike under a grand. inevitably, amost manufacturers need a ful sus bike around the £1K price band to be competitive in the market but a hardtail <£1K will be good enough for all but themost serious UK trails.

as mentioned eleswhere Cube are worth a look but have very short top tubes, usually an inch shorter than most so they can be uncomfortable and you are pitched quite far forward. popular brands like giant, kona, specilaized and trek will have a bike to suit you but brands like merida and focus may offer better value for money. focus are serisouly good bikes for the price and dont let buying online put you off, wiggle are a top company. what mountain bike magazine is a good read and full of advice.

whatever you get must be the right size though or it will be uncomfortable and you wont enjoy riding it.

Many bike shops are kept very busy fixing up bikes bought on ebay.
So buy with care if you go 2nd hand.

there are aenough classified ads online to not bohter with ebay. bikeradar, retrobike etc all have good classifieds sections and you are more likely to be dealing with a cyclist rather than someone selling a bike if you get what i mean... ebay sellers always seem to be reluctatnt to let you come and test things before bidding......

For £399 from Evans Cycles you get one of these with free delivery and a warranty.

And none of the parts are clapped out! No brainer.

I have the F6 Disk 2008 and love it to bits. Bought it last year when the 09 bikes started appearing in the shops and paid £360.

Im now on the scout for a road bike to partner it..... :-)

Defo check the bike mags and websites for 2009 (or even 2007/8) models.

That Cannondale looks unbeatable for the price. Funnily enough I bought a 1999 Canondale in 2000 for half price and it' still my every day commuter/weekend bike...albeit with a lot of new parts.

What he said!! ^^^^^^^^^^^
Read the bike mags. I nearly went potluck a bit on my new one. 2 magazines later (and speaking to friends) and I think I've found the perfect bike! Although it's not here yet, so I could end up with egg on my face! wink

OK there bikes may be slightly less hard work to ride and slightly better handling and in the long run there components should last longer.
I would always pay more to have an easier ride. Most days on my commute to and from work, I get held up by cyclists that are peddling hard while I am only free wheeling.

Have you ridden your friend's £1.5 bikes?

I got this off ebay for £225 and its the best money ive ever spent. I agree with the other boy too, my mates have bikes worth ££££'s and I have more fun because they're to scared to scratch them!

Never spent a penny on it apart from tyres since I got it.

Dont sound v cheap to me.
Rock hopper is a bit heavy going in my experience. I have stump jumper which is a pretty good bike. But the Rock Hopper would need to be £100 cheaper I reckon.

Go for neither, second hand older models with knackered drive trains and worn tyres (probably).

Flippin' heck mate, I thought your budget was £400?

If you want to spend £300 (or less) get a Giant Boulder or Rincon, perfectly acceptable beginners bikes, brand new and with a warranty.

I am looking to sell my Rockhopper, cost me £550 two years ago. Black, 19 inch frame, matte black frame with decent spec. Very good condition and has seen very little use in the time I have had it (spend a lot of time out of the country). Has been mainly used for cycling to work and back, has seen a little off road use but nothing serious. Very nice bike, the rockhoppers are well known as a quality bike. I'll even chuck in a lock and pump!

Need the cash to part fund a new road bike... Make me an offer?
