Having been out of work for over a year and my wife just been laid off on Sunday from her Veterinarian Job, things are about to get very scary indeed...
A guy I just started working for as his "driver" or personal assistant has offered an interesting position with a seemingly reputable HR firm specializing in medical placements. I'd get full "apprenticeship" style training from him for free since he was a founding partner and is joint managing director.
Its 100% commission based, no benefits, health package etc.
70% split to me when I place the right candidate when a job order comes through, could be a Dr. or Nurse or Physician Assistant. Apparently the fee is 20% of the candidate's salary!
I've checked into the company as much as I can and so far everything seems legit and above board, only thing I find hard to believe is the fees involved and ergo my "future" potential earnings.
It definitely sounds a little too good to be true...but times are getting desparate and so far this guy has been paying me to drive his Brabus Mercedes around!
As far as I can see nothing to lose at the moment and it might lead on to better things?

My only experience of Medical Recruitment Consultants is that they earn a funk load of money. Chap I know that runs a firm that does it owns a Murci and a Bentley.
I guess if the consultancy has a good relationship with the hospitals / practices etc then you could be onto a winner.

It is still a relatively strong market,
With regards to 20% fees, this is also more than realistic, maybe not so much at the moment but give it 6 months and you will struggle to find an agency that will work below 15%.
A 70% commission structure is VERY good as well, just brace yourself for a stressful job, trust me.

Things have been a little rough this last year even with the wife making what she did and suffice to say its going to be as bad as it gets in a few weeks time when the rubber cheques start bouncing all over the place. I told my wife and she couldn't be any more negative about the job offer, she basically said its tele sales, commissions take forever to come through and expect to get screwed over by people in the company aswell as outside of it, Oh! and any moron can do it...
But she's still mad at everything cause of the lay off.

Can you live off the money as this chap's driver?
As has been said on here, it can be very good money as a medical recruiter. I presume you don't have enough savings to support you for the first couple of months before your comms come in.
Could you negotiate a small basic and a lower commission while you ramp up?
I burned through the last of my savings moving over here and paying for a wedding, honeymoon and immigration. My wife made good money but we were paying down debt and paying off credit cards so don't have anything in the way of savings.
I've spoken to my "mentor" and he made his best offer of 70% commission (normally 40-50% for newbies) and full use of his car to make it appealing to me. He's also suggested I work for his hot food cart business at weekends with him paying for all the licensing, stock, trailer hitch and gas. I'd get 50% of the day's takings in cash.
My wife thinks this guy is some kind of conman, personally I think he's just trying to help and make a little money at the same time.
Will be working 3 days this week so we'll see how it goes...

Well that was an interesting first week...
I worked 3 days and its not quite what I thought it was. The training involved reading a few company blurbs, mission statements etc. Then learning some terminology (CNO's, RN's, PA's etc) and what the typical requirements are for such placements. My mentor ran through some "role playing" calls with me and showed me some techniques to hook people's interest and what the usual negative responses were.
From there I was shown the company's database of candidates and then onto the client database which consists of repeat customers, 1 off's, chasing up cold leads, and total cold calling in many, many cases.
Its a smaller company maybe 8-11 recruiters and 3 support staff, with a board of directors who I have yet to meet in person, a lot of things are done via conference calls and emails but it seems to keep them lean and streamlined...
I've also been lassoed into helping my mentor with a law suit he's involved with. Which sort of blurs the lines of what he's expecting of me, recruit one minute and legal stuff the next. I wouldn't mind helping except that its robbing me of a lot of time to make any money!
Unfortunately he doesn't seem to realize this and keeps dropping more n more tasks and things to do. I would like to point out I'm not getting paid training and only paid 1-2 days for driving him around.

I officially quit working as a recruiter 2 weeks ago. I spent a month with a phone attached to the side of my head and made hundres of calls only to make zero dollah.Cold calling companies 3,4,5,6,7,8 times to get the message across just didn't work. My mentor's reply
"you ain't working hard enough"

The more I observed this guy, the more I realized he's either delusional or a burnt out recruiter turned con man. He spent most of his days on the phone and internet looking for new staff. Hook them in, get $400-500 bucks off them for "startup costs & materials" then cut loose and leave 'em floundering. I saw probably 20 people being duped in this way whilst I was there.
Made my piss boil.
I listened to this f
k knuckle patronize and ignore people he'd charmed $$$'s from just days before. Then tell them its a hard business and they need to toughen up. He actually comes across as very personable and genuine at first, but after a few weeks so many things just didn't add up.
For instance;
1) Brabus Mercedes - Not actually a real Brabus, I looked under the hood and checked the engine. Its just a CL 430 with spiffy wheels and badges. No "B's" anywhere...
2) Doesn't actually own the house he lives in, I did a quick online check of ownership. Not him or his wife.
3) Company offices not his, just a friend's office space he was using to make some calls and have "business mail" directed to.
4) Big talk, little money. At the beginning of November he asked if we could stop driving his Merc since I HAD apparently caused an engine problem! Turns out his "tags" (equivalent to road license) had expired in September and he didn't have the $460 to renew them! Hence just use my car to get around, without reimbursing my petrol cost. Despite asking point blank several times.
5) No money in company accounts, at all. I overheard a screaming match with him and a Citi bank official. He tried to claim some previous employee fraudulently used his card and emptied his business checking/current account. Except,Jorge Ramirez's atm card was sitting on my desk in his home office when I came in early one day...
Citi bank refunded the $643 dollars and said they will investigate the claim. fk knuckle then tells me he can't pay me for driving him around anymore. Which I politely reminded him he hadn't paid me since I started "recruiter training". No Comment.
6) Conference calls, company directors, secretaries. All bullst.I then found out his "database" is a huge AMA "blue book" listing all the depts. & contact details of hospitals, clinics, medical centers etc. in the USA.

So overall quite a learning experience, I'm out of pocket for nearly all those weeks of trying to be a recruiter. Wife is doing relief work to keep us in our house. What's really pissing me off is that I've lost all that job hunting time AND MADE NO MONEY.
I don't doubt for a second that a genuine company can make good money in the HR business. Bullstters like John...not so much.
In other news I've signed up to the local college to improve my math skills and take some classes in electronics and basic electrical theory. Also got a friend who is trying to get me into FedEx and another who is supposed to call today about a "jerb" at Lowes.

To be fair it did come across as genuine and legit at first. I did all my checks, google, better business bureau and county court records to see what law suits had been brought against the company.
All seemed good to start with but the cracks started to appear quickly once I was there on a daily basis.
