It's interesting to reflect how Europe would look now if we had not been allied with France in 1914 (an idea from King Edward who didn't care for the Teutonic way of doing things). But Germany was arming furiously on a wave of nationalism and was very envious of the British Empire, so I suspect they'd have attacked us directly eventually when they felt strong enough.
