On the M40 yesterday, front offside yikes

No punture, don't remember anything hitting the wheel, just blew a hole in the side wall. Bit worrying as I put all four corners on only a couple of months ago.

Anyone else had problems with Toyos?

That sounds like a lucky escape yikes

Did you manage to remain in control easily ?

Think its recommended that maybe Toyos might not be the best thing for a heavy car like a 'Ro. Better for smaller ligher cars but thats only what i've heard not experienced.

like running too much weight through them? Is the toyo really up to carrying the weight?

The bits of rubber inside the tyre indicate it was flat for time before it went bang. That's curb/stone/debris damage for sure, tyre started going flat which then overheated, which then went pop.

I didn't really notice it at all, I just noticed a bit of vibration as if the road was a bit pitted, changed lanes and the vibration didn't change. So I pulled onto the hard shoulder and stopped to find the tyre with a hole in the side. I too expected somthing a bit more dramatic.

Bloody hellyikesFirst of all thank god your ok. You know i was reading the Autocar article just a few hours ago and i quote Roger Keys(Monkfish) "These cars are hyper sensitive to tyre choice" "Grip is not brilliant from the manufacturer-fitted tyres, but they do have a very strong side wall.
" The factory tyres are 18inch Bridgestone Potenzas or 19inch Pirelli P Zero Rossos, although Mitchelin Pilot Sports can be used".
BUT WHATEVER YOU GO FOR, YOU NEED TO KNOW THAT THIS LARGE, HEAVY CAR PUTS AN IMMENSE AMOUNT OF PRESSURE ON THE SIDEWALL OF ANY TYRE.
BUY THE WRONG ONE AND IT MAY COLLAPSE, WITH TERRIFYING CONSIQUENSES

I run TOYO T1-R all round, they have plenty of fast road use and track action and are fine. The sidewall rating is actually stronger then the factory fit tyres..

Trying to say there is too much weight, is total nonsense.

Whilst on the subject of tires! If you have used your road tires for a bit of RWYB racing then check them carefully as I noticed on mine that one of them had a chuck of rubber ripped out down to the cord, about the size of a 5p. No other damage just an obvious riped out hole! You ave been warned.

Clearly not anything to do with the sidewall stiffness or loading. I would say this is possible debris or kerb damage initially but more likely debris off the motorway. If the sidewall was to fail you would more than likely see delamination of the tread surface and the tyre would look a lot worse than this. I would definately say nothing to so with the construction of the tyre or being heavily loaded even at high speed.

Yeah Stig. Stupid boysmile
really? Thats why you need the tyres with strengthened high load sidewalls then?

t1r's have a softer sidewall than re050's.that doesnt mean less strong though.

i have used t1r's on my s2000 for the last 3 years but compensated for the soft sidewalss with more pressure in the fronts [4 psi] and a bit more in the rears [2psi].

the toyos for that car are a better wet tyre and the re050's were slightly better dry grip.the re050's lasted longer on the rear but that might have been due to me having a geo setup which gave more rear grip.

i will be fitting toyo's to my r8 when i have done the fronts.

Its interesting reading this although concerning. Glad there was no harm done though.

Couple of years back I was driving on the duel carriageway in my trusty Supra running Toyo Proxes all round as I used to swear by them.
It started with a squeak from the dash while doing 70 then a bit more vibration before finally becoming really obvious something was wrong with lots of vibration at 40 and a good bit of steering correction so I had find a place to pull over. Once I'd stopped there was a cloud of smoke that overtook me and I soon found out that the rear tyre was mangled, red hot and split all the way round the inside wall. The worrying part was the tyre garage could find no traces of the cause. After posting on the supra forum I found that there had been a few other people who had experienced similar with Toyos so I've stayed clear since.

Maybe just coincidence I dont know. I do remember cornering hard through a left hand sweeping bend a couple of days beforehand and it was the rear left that gave up.

Dear hainser,

that looks similar to my n/s front that went in the Highlands - stock Bridgestone. I think it's just bad luck. I also don't remember any obvious event that caused the tyre to let go.

Low profile tyres have their downsides as well as their ups,

regards,
Jet
