USB to Ethernet adapter...any suggestions?
Discussion
Got the laptop connected to the firewall (which also connects to the PC). Now both machines can use the internet connection.
This may sound like a backward step, but will also allow me to use the PCs data on the laptop...
I want to connect the network socket on the laptop to a USB socket on the PC, to use both the internet, and access to and from the PCs disks.
So:
Can you suggest which, if any, if the best, cheapest, smallest, usb powered adapter I could get to sort out my requirements?
Thanks Peeps,
LB

Although you're suggesting that they're already connected to the firewall together, which would mean that they should already be able to get at each other. Other option would be to put a hub/switch into the forewall then the computers into that.

Thanks for this guys
You're right about the two machines being effectively connected through the firewall/hub, but I'm having trouble configuring that firewall to allow me to upload via ftp....config is through a web page....and I'm a little thick on that, but will put up a screen print later and ask the question about that one.
In the meantime, the firewall device (Firebrick) is disconnected, and I'm using ZoneAlarm for a software firewall, but cannot get the laptop connected at the same time obviously (only one network port).
Hence the need to :
a)understand the firebrick config setup.
b)get either a usb to ethernet adapter, or get a network card for a pci slot.
JonRB, whereabouts are you? Might be interested in your network card...

Steve,
I know this may seem trivial but have you set up any user access levels on the PC that could be stopping the laptop connecting.
Also i have a Dlink CAT5 to USB adapter somewhere
steve
I've not tried to see if I can see the PC from my laptop yet....no doubt that'll be fun and games for me
Pardon my complete ignorance but is Dlink CAT5 to USB adapter what I'm looking for? If so, how much are they?
JonRB, thanks for the offer of the network card...I may well still take you up on your kind offer, but it would mean yet another cable plugged into the back of the machine connected with 5m of cable lying on top. Using a USB ethernet adaptor would allow me to plug into the front USB port of the PC, and so when not in use I can simply put it away in a cupboard.
Having said that, would they both do exactly the same thing, or is the traditional network PCI card better than the USB adaptor?
Steve

A PCI network card would take the strain of the CPU but the Dlink USB network adapter does the same but use more of the CPU power.
Adv of USB network adapter plug in and play, i got it with my laptop dont know why it came with wireless and a intergrated CAT5 port in the back so was a bit confused.
This is the one i have:-
