www.bikehike.co.uk

and click on course creater

It combines Google Maps and Ordnance Survey to give you a combination of both and also the elevation plot for both, it's certainly the first mapping tool I've come across which offers this.

If you've got a compatible GPS unit you can save the routes as courses. Adding coursepoints is also useful for information like where the shops are or the start or top of a hill.

Although it's UK based you can use the Google Maps element overseas too.

I use this too. Really really handy and the tcx export works perfectly with my Garmin Edge. You can also import tcx tracks.

If you have a training oriented Garmin unit then connect.garmin.com is really good too.

On a much cruder note, does anyone know if there's a way of storing your current location as a point of interest on a TomTom, then saving another one at the next waypoint on the trail until you've built up a grid and uploading them?

In other words can you reverse engineer your route to show where you've been and create a map?

Does this tool only work with Garmin GPS units? I've got a satnav unit running tomtom, IGO8 and Miomaps, and I can't get it to work with any of them. To be fair, I don't really understand the difference between the various formats you can save the maps in from bikehike, and I don't really know which directory on the SD card I need to save them. I've been trying different formats in different directories but not had any luck getting any of the aforementioned GPS programs to "see" the downloaded maps.

you can, first export your route as one of the following from the website 'tcx' or 'gpx'.

Next youll need to convert this to tomtom format which is 'itn' i use a program called POI editor there are bound to be others.

Once converted copy this into the 'itinerary' folder (if its not there already you can manually create it) of your tomtom install directory. Now when you load tomtom up, i cant remember the exact naming or where the option is in TomTom but its there somewhere but you can navigate using this itinerary.

Thanks for your reply! smile

I followed your instructions but could not get http://www.poieditor.com/to work, it just seemed to hang there when uploading and not do anything frown

However, I found this site which seemed to work: http://garmin.gps-data-team.com/edit/poi_manager_o...

After loading the file from bikehike, I converted it into a .kml file, then I used the following program to convert from .kml into .itn: http://www.poieditor.com/poi_convert/kml-to-itn/

Then I searched my SD card with the tomtom software on and stuck the .itn file in the "ITN" folder. When I fire up tomtom, if I go to "itinerary planning," then "load itinerary," I can see and select the .itn file that I put on there. However, when I select it, it displays a message saying "The itinerary is currently empty. Use the ADD button to add destinations and waypoints."

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? I really want to get this working so as I can ride some of the routes on that site!

Many thanks for your help, much appreciated! smile

OK, I've been playing and I think I found what was wrong. For some reason, the .itn file size was 0 bytes which didn't sound right. I tried again and downloaded a .txt file from bikehike, then converted that into a .itn file Now its around 12 bytes or so, it must have some data in there now. I've put this onto the SD card and now when I open up tomtom and click "Load itinerary," then select my new .itn file it brings up a list of what looks like a load of web addresses, all "www.gps-data-team.com/", which must link back to this website: http://garmin.gps-data-team.com/edit/poi_manager_o....

If I select "ADD", it comes up "no more locations can be added to the itinerary." If I select "OPTIONS" then "START NAVIGATION" it displays "warning: the itinerary ends in a waypoint! Turn it into a destination?" It doesn't matter if I select "YES" or "NO", nothing happens, the display just reverts back to my current destination.

I'm stuck frown
