I am on BT Broadband, and was supplied the Alcatel adsl modem. I have bought a wireless router than plugs into the LAN port on the pc.
Seems that I can set it up, and the modem believes it is correctly working, but when i try to launch IE it cannot find the server.
For the first time ever i have read and reread the instructions, but to no avail.

Any ideas?

do you have a "link light"?

You *may* need a cat-5 crossover cable rather than a straight through!

Are there any markings on the router next to the ethernet port? anything like "mdi" or "mdi-x" for example?

there arent any marking like that. On the back of the router you have the option to use USB or LAN connection, and cable is supplied for both. (They recommend LAN).

I dont know what a link light is. The modem lights are LAN (always on), Data (flashes) ADSL (always on) and Ready (which flashes ready)

is there a little light/led next to the lan connection on your pc? if so, it should be on.
so you know if the cable they supply is for connecting the router *directly* to a pc, or is it for connecting to a hub or switch?

There isnt a light by the LAN socket.

I think that the computer found the router during set up, but once set up, when i try to open IE it cant find it.

I have looked at my setting and it still has ALcatel Speedtouch Connection as default. Should i remove this?

if you're using the lan connection, then AFAIK you should tell your computer to use the lan, and not a "dialup" connection. if you still have the USB cable between them, you might want to remove it.

....is it a dark blue speedtouch v4 with the 3 (hopefullly green) lights on the top?

Don't know if this is any help as I use a Mac and I am on BT broadband. Anyway when I installed my routers I had to launch my browser (I use Safari or Mozilla rather than IE) and log on to an http address that was given in the literature that came with the router, made up of numbers rather than a www address. The literature also gave a username and password to use. Once these were entered the router made a few clicking noises and lights flashed and hey presto, internet access established. This was a once-only procedure that enabled the router to be configured automatically giving internet/email access.
Good luck, Paul

It wasn't my BT username and password it was a username and password given in the literature that came with the router. For example, with my Netgear DG834 router I put in 'admin' as user and 'password' as the password (without the quotes). As I say, somewhere in the router literature it should give you the words to use. If your router happens to be supplied by ADSL Nation, i've got the username and passwords for that somewhere.

Apologies Paul, the first time i set it up with their detailsusername "admin" and password "epicrouter"

Once that was completed i had to go to the LAN settings, and install my details. Does that make sense.

I am using windows 98. The speedtouch connects via a USB port, not LAN (if that makes sense).

Appreciate your help Hobbit and Paul.

I don't recall having to put in my BT username and passwords anywhere other than in my 'accounts' in my email programme. The only other settings I had to configure myself was I had to tell TCP/IP to be 'DHCP' and that I connected to the internet via 'Built-in ethernet'. As said before, I using a Mac running OSX so I don't know where you'll find these preferences on a PC, although they must be there somewhere!

If its USB, even though broadband is not strictly dialup, your pc still have to use a dialup connection.... the speedtouch software should have sorted it for you.... unfortunatly I'm not familiar with connecting them via USB as I use LAN. I'll have a think and reply again in the morning... MrsHobbit is going to bed so must dash........

If you need some help mail me i can be on MSN and talk you through it if you wish

Also what Router have you got now, also is there any firewall software installed on the PC.

how was the computer connected to the net previously with your old modem?

I have got a Netgear DM602 Modem in router mode connected to a Wireless access point via a Netgear 16 port switch. So bit more complex here so should beable to help you through the install

I am not a fan of the USB based modems.

They hog the cpu, require a PC to be always on to get net access, and are very flakey.

I have just upgraded my 'old' ASDL Modem/WiFI router solution to a new 54g solution.

I find the 'all in one' much easier.

simply plug in, turn on, enter password and your away, Wifi/Firewall/Router/Nat all in one.

Old ones on ebay atm.

As for the speedtouch, its just a case of installing the software CD, which should in turn create a DUN connection (Dial UP Networking) which dials 0.

This then authenticates you with the local radius server, and your away.

You IE install is still looking for a USB modem, not the router.

Open it up, goto Tools, Internet Options, Connections, Lan Settings, make sure the top box is ticked (Auto detect settings) and nothing else. Then shut down I.E. and try again.

If that doesn't work, it would suggest that something else is wrong (cunning), my router tells me if the link to BT Broadband is active, does yours?

Ok, changed the setting as per dovevi's instructions. Still didint work.

One thing i have found is that when i go into my connection setting for the WAN port it doesnt show my IP Address or Subnet mask which the instructions say it should.

Anyone got a sinclair spectrum i could borrow, i may be able to work that.
