Hi all, work are buying me a wedding present and it seems traditional that the recipient gets something useful for their ktichen...

...a hand blender would be good to make soups, crush ice, grind fresh coffee etc.

Can someone recommend a good one?

Do you mean a stick blender?

These were half price in Robert Dyas when I went looking:

Very useful, but I can't see how you'd grind coffee with it.

I have one of these, miles ahead of the cheap hand blenders I struggled with for years. I use it a couple of times a week for soups, sauces etc. Can even whisk skimmed milk to the constituency of whipped cream and blend in some fruit for a nice fat free desert.

Models have changed since I bought mine - but the "Mono" looks akin to the one I've got.

You need the grinder accessory to grind coffee, whole spices etc - standard on some models, extra on others - but works very well indeed.
