Jailbreaking iphone
Discussion
A friend has asked me to jailbreak his dad's Iphone. At the moment it doesn't work, just shows the connect to Itunes image.
It's an old phone, with a sim modification to allow it to run on other networks. (ie small circuit board thing over sim.
1. How do I identify which version the phone is? It's an 8GB model but thats all I know (I know nothing about Iphones)
2. I tried redsn0w but am getting no where (never does the 2nd reboot).
What do I need to know?
Thanks,
This should help, but you will need to identify the phone before you start:

Thanks dude.
Apparently it's one of the first. so is that a 1G?!?!?!
It sounds like it will be the 8gb 2G then. Very easy to jailbreak, just follow the instructions in the link. Don't worry too much, I have never heard of anybody completely screwing up their iphone trying (I'm sure some will have though, just a very small number).Apparently it's one of the first. so is that a 1G?!?!?!
Ok, this isn't working for me.
Using Redsn0w it doesn't complete the 2nd reboot. Waited over an hour, and nothing.
Redsn0w (version 0.8) also doesn't like the latest firmware 3.0.1
iliberty doesn't think the phone is in recovery mode (when Itumes says it is).
Anybody have any ideas?
btw, this is using XP on a DELL D620

I don't think that you have identified which iPhone it is on the thread yet? Before anyone can assist, you need to identify which model it is.
Then, once you have done so, use the flowchart on iClarified to identify which process to follow. It is pretty foolproof, with step by step screenshots.

Firstly though, make sure that you have done a full factory reset and that it works with an O2 SIM before attempting to Jailbreak it again.
Report back to HQ.

Take the SIM proxy out of the thing *completely* before trying the pwnagetool / redsn0w process.
The mk1 iPhones are completely 0wned by the dev team exploits now and a fully unlocked phone with latest software can be had very easily - no dangerous and illegal SIM hacks required.
If that SIM proxy is still in there, I'd expect it to interfere with the jailbreak / unlock process. Get rid of it and put any old normal SIM in the phone.
Then run the process for the mk1, run BootNeuter (which will allow all baseband firmwares to be loaded) and then let the Dev Team tools hack the baseband for network unlock
Any SIM will work then, without any need for dodgy proxy hardware.
And you'll find it works a LOT better - the SIM proxy solutions are known for dropping signal, late SMS arrival, and general unreliability. What model is it BTW (the SIM proxy, not the iPhone)?

For me, using a mac is not an option.
There used to be a time when the so-called 'Pwnage' tools were available on OS X well before any Windows version, but iTunes is released at the same version number by Apple for both Windows and OS X, and the Dev Team now usually have tools available for both major OSes at the same time. You shouldn't *need* a Mac to do this, though IME jailbreaking works better via Mac (specifically the Intel ones). That said, the first 3GS jailbreak was a Windows-only app that George Hotz chucked out in alpha for us to mess about with...
Using a Mac is always an option - if you think it's the only way to get it working, then bung VMware on your PC, and run OS X inside a virtual machine (I think it's possible now...) - no need to pay the Apple tax if you're happy downloading illegal torrents.

Not 100% sure I'll stick with the iPhone - fingerprints on the screen are bugging me already. I can see me rapidly going back to my Windows mobile - stylus and keyboard input much better for my OCD tendencies than a grubby, greasy sceen :-}
Wash your hands! It only picks up greasy fingerprints from greasy fingers
I give my screen a wipe once a week and its fine.Tiggsy said:

And I have to retract what I said earlier about the Dev Team tools and Windows - the Dev Team have now made it clear that they only produce Mac tools for OS X. Any Windows versions of their tools will be third-party jobs with all the attendant risks etc. However if you can run OS X in a VM on a Windows or Linux box then there's no problem.

Yes, thanks for the tip - managed to get OSX working in VMWare. Pity about the non-unlockable bootloader/baseband versions. The limitation is solely because the Dev Team haven't found a bug to exploit in 3.1 yet. All they need is one local root exploit and they'll be able to directly jailbreak the new version, so if you're willing to wait then they may eventually have a crack for the new firmware.

Got it jailbroken ok now. Just not unlocked. I think that is the correct terminology. So it works like an iPod - not a phone.
So far - very impressed by web browser - it is actually usable for surfing proper web sites. Not so hot for text entry - it has taken me 10 mins to write this post - selecting text is hard without a stylus and keyboard. Can't find the arrow keys to move the cursor around. But suspect I could get better at this with some practice.
Yeah that's just practice, and also the software learns where you most frequently mistype. Or it's meant to - mine still has a problem with catching the shift key when I'm going for a A.So far - very impressed by web browser - it is actually usable for surfing proper web sites. But I can type full page emails with the iPhone now - it really is just a question of practice and getting the phone to augment its dictionary with words you tend to use a lot. I'd say that it's quicker than a Treo-sized keyboard, and much faster than anything requiring a stylus. Selection and cursor positioning are only useful *now* with the new copy/paste tech in 3.0 - before then, only cursor placement was easy (the magnifying glass feature is neat).
Worth learning *all* the gestures if you want to get the most out of an iPhone - single presses, long holds, etc. all do different things and Apple had to squeeze a lot of different gestures in for text input because the usual selection tools (arrow keys, shift, ctrl, etc.) aren't available. I think they did a very clever job, but it is really frustrating if you don't know that to move the text input caret around, you hold your finger down until the magnifying glass appears, etc... also two-finger scroll in input boxes to move around - something Apple need to work on because I'm finding it a bit unreliable on some websites (e.g. entering text into reply boxes on PH mobile, classic case)...
