What's it worth? 1998 328i sport coupe
Discussion
Apologies for the boring thread, but I'm going to sell my 1998 S reg E36 BMW 328i sport coupe and I've noticed that prices vary wildly out there. It's done 88k miles, has really nice leather seats and I've fitted an Alpine CD player. Interior in amazing condition, bodywork average (tiny spots of rust forming, but otherwise pristine). What would you put it up for sale for?
thanks
thanks

Bit of a marmite colour, but seems like a good example nonetheless - late, low mileage, good condition, standard.
I'd put it up in the top end of the 328i Sport bracket - they are popular cars at the moment and with all being pretty much under £5k, someone should give you asking.
Btw - remove the plastic covers from the rear of your headlamps to let the moisture out before anyone comes over to view it.

Thanks for the hints guys. I'm not in a desperate rush to sell it, and I think you'd struggle to find a better one (mine had brand new BMW sports suspension fitted a year ago, purely because I'm really picky about how my cars drive, along with four new tyres and I've had 3 geos done on it just to make sure it's all perfect
). Therefore I think I'll advertise it for £3500 and see how I get on.

I have a 318i that I didn't want to get rid of so I asked them how old a car has to be to qualify for classic cover, they said (for me)11 years. If yours isn't 11 years old maybe you could hang on a few months.

Rob you need some more photos, good luck with the sale.
Thank you. I haven't really been at home to take photos or look through the photos on my PC since I decided to advertise it, but hopefully I can get some good shots up there soon. I realise I've started the price quite high, but given that I've spent £5500 on it getting it up to scratch I think it's a good buy!R360 said:
Well i bought a 1998 323 coupe a few weeks ago, 110k excellent condition, leather, heated seats, parking sensors, lots of history and i paid £1700 for it, so would expect a low mielage 328 to be worth around £2500
Thanks. Not sure about the 323s, but it took me a few months to find my 328 sport coupe, and at the time (just under two years ago) the going rate was £3-4k for a shoddy one and £5k for a really good one. I even saw some above £5k. That's all fsh of course. Any E36 with more than 60-80k miles on it will need new suspension to be any good, so it's important to factor that in too - new BMW sports suspension is £1100 for the parts alone. I paid £4850 for mine and as I said above I've spent £5500 on it. Mine's on at £3750 now but of course I'm open to offers. I'll get a trade-in value soon too.Nice low mileage sports can make good money. I think anything up to 4k is an acceptable asking price.
Mine is for sale at the moment, same model & year as yours but higher mileage, I put it at 3k or nearest as it has a small amount of rust on one of the arches
.
I love the boston green coupes, my last sport was boston & it polished up beautifully.

I've got mine up in the classifieds at the moment for £3000 but had very little interest in 2 weeks.
I started it off at £3500 but managed to put a dent in the bootlid by hitting my wheelie bin which was against the wall of the house, thanks to inconsiderate parking meaning having to get in via a very tight angle
As a result I have taken it down to £3000 but like I say, very very slow at the minute. The car's in good condition, Aegean Blue, which IMO is one of the nicest colours and very rare, is an individual and has stacks of history.
It's frustrating as I'm trying to get it sold before my insurance ends later this month. I really want to get my hands on a Skyline so it's winding me up somewhat

I really love this car, so will be sorry to see it go, but I just don't want to alter the engine characteristics by messing around with a 325 manifold etc. And it's a bit of a childhood dream, getting a Skyline.
Just wish I'd been able to get some really nice pics in the sun, as the colour really comes to life and changes from a dark blue to a sparkly metallic blue with a green tint. It's lovely

Thanks. It's up for £3750; just on Pistonheads at the moment.
I spoke to my local BMW dealer and they recommended £3500 for the value, so I'm obviously in the right ballpark. In my opinion any E36 of this age needs new suspension desperately, and mine's got that when most don't, so it should sell.

You could try cleaning it before photos, nothing puts me off an advert more than filthy wheels. It looks shabby with missing centrecaps as well and enthusiasts after a nice standard example will be put off by the Ebay angel eyes.
Make it look nice, photograph it, and you'll have more luck.

It'll get another wash either tonight or tomorrow. I left the centre caps off while I got the wheels balanced, to save messing about. They are back on now

As for the angels, most of them seem to have those now. And IMO they do look very good and quite OEM to my eyes. Xenon lights are a real must with these cars. The standard lights are poor.
It would be easy enough to put some standard lights back on it though if it would help sell it.
The OP mentions new suspension which I deffo agree with on these. I put brand new springs and rear shocks on mine. The fronts have been ok and the bushes are in good nick. If you buy one that hasn't been done, you're selling yourself short and won't enjoy the car to the fullest.

With worn suspension at best an E36 will wander and give a very vague drive, and at worst they'll be lethal in the wet. I'm convinced E30s and E36s have contributed to this myth about RWD being scary. A well sorted and fresh E36 will be a doddle to drive in any conditions and have absolutely peerless steering, ride and handling. New BMW sport suspension is about £1600 fitted IIRC, so finding a car with it fitted is well worth it. Not that I'm trying to sell my car or anything
It always winds me up when people say they've bought this or that iconic driver's car with 90k miles on the clock when what they don't realise is that with worn suspension it'll be a mere shadow of its iconic status at new.
