Currently have a Denon 3801 amp that i purchased around 8 years ago, after 4 house moves all does not seem well. The rear right speaker out does not work, the component out does not work and the feed to the sub does not work, ofcourse it may be the speakers and cable, and i will test that (somehow??)but i think its day is over!
Unfortunatly, not exactly flush at the moment, so when I saw the price of the Onkyo TX sr507 I wondered, given the rate tech moves on, would this be a reasonable equivalent for my Denon?
I'm the first to admit I dont have a 'keen' ear regarding sound quality, and we do not play much music, its 80pct for home cinema use.
Also FYI its running Kef eggs, the 2005 originals!

You have to take into account that the 3801 was only one step down from the top model in it's day and the power amps and power supply are probably built better than a mid/low range current amp (from any manufacturer) due to ever increasing cost savings. However, your speakers shouldn't be too hard for an amp to drive at modest levels, so perhaps the improvements in processors might mitigate against going down the price ladder. You could always have a demo to see....

Re the connections on the 3801, simple is to swop the left and right surround cables at the amp end to check if the fault is at the amp or speaker/cable end. With the sub wyou need to check if the amp has it set to 'on' first, then try a spare cable (any RCA one should do, even if you have to move the sub closer to try a shorter lead). Might save you a few pounds if it's just a connnection/cable issue, or maybe your right back speaker has gone and no new amp would fix that.
