I was driving along the A267 towards Tunbridge Wells at 1.30am the other morning when I approached a speed camera on my side of the road. My Valentine One detector was silent so I carried on at just under 40mph. There were no other cars around apart from one on the other side of the road about 110 yards ahead of me. Just as I approached the camera it flashed once in my face. Can cameras now flash from the front at cars approaching them and only have to flash once? More importantly, why didn't my detector pick anything up?

Any advice anyone?

Cheers

If fixed camera and on your side of the road and facing you it sounds like a Truvelo. What colour was the flash? - Streaky

Streaky,

It was bright and white so not infra-red. I can't remember what road marking were on the road but other cameras in the area have the usual markings for about 50 yards or so. The detector did pick up other detectors in the area.

Sounds like a faulty Gatso to me - I got flashed in exactly the same way by a Gatso in Cambridge doing about 40 - and my Snooper didn't detect the camera either. That was about 2 months ago and nothing has happened so I presume all is well.

I also seem to recollect from my research that only the Truvelo can flash from the front as they have the colour filter over the flash to prevent the driver from being blinded - if it was a bright white flash as you say then relax!

I drove past the camera today and it was a Truvelo!!! I didn't think they flashed though. I guess I still have a week of looking at the doormat.

What is the speed limit on that bit of road?

30. I was just under 40, probably 39.

Edited to say

Anyone know if Truvelos are invisible to Valentine detectors as mine gave no warning.

Damn Truvelos! Some are infra red and some flash but with the mageneta filter. Radar detectors don't pick them up because they use pressure tubes embedded in the road - look for the four black strips directly before the 3 or 4 close spaced white lines.

I guess the message is to always slow if I see a camera sign and not rely on the detector.

I am hoping that as it is now over 14 days since I was flashed and nothing has come through the post that I am okay.

Nevermind...just one of those things....Does this just mean 3 points on your licence, or did you have previous points?

Also, was the truvelo hidden or something....?

Why did you pass it at 35mph.. (presumably, your speedo would have been showing 36/37mph)
