I have a background in Valeting and detail my own car, but am thinking of branching out and maybe doing detailing as a second income, and maybe take it full-time if things go well.

My question is, are there any places (preferably in the North West), that offer detailing training, either Auto Glym, Meguiars or Zymol?

Cheers,

Rob

Autoglym do a two day course I believe as do Meguiars. However you will learn a whole load more by experimenting yourslef with avariety of products, asking questions and understanding the best methods, not just spending money on product. Any experience of using a D/A or rotary polisher....this is where the skill comes in as does the money for amazing results.

Going mobile or getting premises?

I started on Auto Glym, but have changed to Meguiars. I did everything by hand, but just invested in an orbital polisher and tried it out on my car today, made things a lot easier.

Not sure which way to go yet, will start with friends and family and maybe put some fliers though local houses, see how it goes.

How do you know how much to charge for varying detailing jobs??

Dave Bowerman at Sportscar Protection offers a training course, he works on a lot of stuff we've done, so I can HIGHLY recommend his work ethic & skill, not sure on costs etc, but it might be worth giving him a ring - he's based in the Midlands. Tell him Al at Alsa referred you.

Good luck, Al.

Just looked.

2 day course - £600!

2 week course - £2k!!!!!!!!!!! This is the sort of thing I was looking for, but way out of reach of what I can afford.

I think the AutoGlym course is around £400 maybe a little less for two full days. Detailing cars can cost from a half decent wash £30 with a hoover inside and a clean of the windows, tyres etc through to a full two day valet costing upwards of £500 if using very expensive waxes and detailing the engine, nourishing the leather and cleaning the inside of the exhaust, wheels, brake calipers and chassis.

Talk to Matt at off your marks ( www.offyourmarks.com ) he dose training and is up north west (IIRR manchester way) its not going to be cheap to have any one teach you there tricks of the trade, especially when your looking at the top end of the market, but you get what you pay for, if i was in your position id rather learn from an experienced pro than a product manufacture as that way you will get an unbias opinion on products etc.

If you want to go down the Megs route email them directly (they do have open days but they wont teach you nearly enough to do it for money just an insight to products)

Auto Glym and Auto Smart are leaders in bulk valet trade products but there training is not going to give you much in the way of detailing.

Zymol, you need to talk to Zymol Europe (parc ferme) but licensing is between 7-15K

Just practice a lot with the machine polishers. When you feel confident perhaps offer to do some cheap jobs for people. I did quite a few freebies to people with nice/interesting cars.I found this very worthwhile as more or less every freebie I did lead to repeat business oreferal work for sensible money!
There are people on detailing world who offer tuition details which might be worthwhile if you don't want to shell out £00's on courses.
