Everyone always bhes and moans about clattery diesel engines, and yeah, on a vw polo or whatever, its not particularly inspiring.

But, for me, theres something that just sounds so good about an interesting diesel engine, i used to love the sound of the 5cylinder diesel engine in vw vans. And the sound of a v8 in a scania, or even a straight 6 volvo truck engine with an aftermarket exhaust. I remember the used to be a peugeot 306 with straight pipes live near me, the turbo whistle was awesome.

I'm in canada at the moment and there are loads of powerstroke diesel v8's in ford pickup trucks that sound awesome, and the cummins engines in dodge rams. They just sound so much more purposeful than the petrol engined equivilents (dont get me wrong, i love a nice petrol v8, but diesel sounds more purposeful, if you get me). Maybe its the turbo whistle, i dunno.

Anyone else? Just me? ah, ok getmecoat

No Nick, it's just you, that said I haven't paid much attention to V8 dervs, I will be sure to try and find one I like.

Are you the same BFN as was on the 306GTI6 forum about a million years ago?

I think the problem is mainly that in Europe, "diesel" generally means small economical sub-two litre econo-engine. The one in my wife's Fabia is great, pulls well, does 55mpg, but it just sounds unpleasant.

However, having recently reacquainted myself with the 70's cheesefest that is "Convoy", I can sortof see your point about the large truck engines. Only sortof, mind biggrin

I'm quite partial to the sound from some diesels. I would say that I find they often sound better than petrol in maritime applications.

I love big diesels with straight pipes. A Land Rover TD5 with straight through exhaust sounds really mean. I know what you mean about the big V8 truck diesels though, I was recently side by side with an enormous recovery lorry, the sort that pick up broken down coaches and lorries, and it had the most fantastic exhaust note I've heard in a long time.

What about the deltic (sp?) in that train, the one with the cylinders in a triangular shape? They sounded pretty awsome at full chat biggrin

I like that one, but for the power, not the sound. Are you sure you're not getting grunt mixed up with noise?

The Mercedes 5 cylinder non turbo diesel used in the 190 and W124 from the mid 80's to early 90's sounds absolutely lovely.

That was unexpected. That Audi V6 sounded decent from behind but what about in front/outside/in the cabin?

The rest of the diesel rackets? /o\

The 2 stroke Detroit Diesels are music. They don't have much of a fanbase amongst the mechanics that work on them though.

I like the sound of my diesel, much more interesting that an 4 pot petrol engine. It's a 3.0V6 TDi, and it can sound meaty when pushed.

I love the sound of diesel engines, it means my taxi has arrived and I can get home warm and dry or my parcel has arrived.
