The root treatment shouldn't be painful at all and is the only way to save your (presumably) infected tooth.

The infection certainly won't go away by itself so either have the tooth out or (better still) have the root treatment.

With the tooth numbed up kindly you'll be fine smile

Root canal filling is pain free, I had one done in Feb, with no anesthesia at all.

The swelling is very unlikely to go away, it could get a lot worse and cause you lots more pain.

Had mine done a couple of weeks ago and it was a breeze. I had been getting pain from the tooth but the pain went away before my next visit, the dentist then told me that the nerve had died so I didn't need a local into the gum. Don't worry, get it sorted asap! I used to be terrified of going to the dentists years ago but think nothing of it these days, it's quite relaxing actually, especially if you've got a fit dental nurse helping out.

I used to hate the dentist, but these days I end up so relaxed I could happily sit through another session.

I got no pain from my root canal - the only pain (aside from my wallet) was when they removed the nerve - but that was only for a second or so.

It's very rare to get even that and it's usually only if the nerve is very inflamed, so you were unlucky!

i had one of two root canals done today, i experienced what my dentist described as heat transfer, it felt like a red hot poker was thrust deep into the said tooth, dentist said few people get it and no matter how much local you have, it will not stop it.

Sounds like the nerve was very inflamed and he had to inject anaesthetic directly into it to numb it. That does smart rather just for a second but afterwards no pain at all. smile

No pain?! Feck me! Bastados!

I had a root canal done on a tooth that got infec from being cracked in a kickboxing incedent (not decay!) and never felt pain like it. I've broken bones, dislocated joints, sprained all sorts, but nothing compared to root canal treatment! Even more to the thought that my dentist of the time was crap.

Probably made worse by the fact I had major tooth ache for 2 days beforehand and my whole face swelled up bigtime. frown

I had a root canal done about ten years ago. A couple of weeks ago it started throbbing, which is something I thought should not be able to happen. Dentist on Monday. Dread to think what the outcome will be...

Oh, and this is one of my two front teeth! However it is the story of how, as a child, I learned that accelerator pedals are analogue in real life and not digital (as they were on the computers back then). It's a *very* long story...

One of the worst decisions I ever made was agreeing to 2 root canals about a decade ago at a university dentists surgery. Neither tooth had caused me any pain or other issues.

The dentist spent 2 or 3 1-hour appointments drilling one of the teeth (and repeatedly x-raying it) because she couldn't find one of the roots. I distinctly recall another dentist coming in and telling her at one point that the tooth would break if she didn't stop. She did another session of drilling etc. after this. The damn thing broke less than a year later but at least it was at the back.

She didn't get quite so far with the other tooth. She started drilling and put in a temporaty filling. The tooth split in two at home. So I got the tooth mostly taken off and a crown applied. That fell off a couple of years later and wasn't replaceable, so I had to get the root extracted. I still have the gap - near the front.

Sorry to hear about your unpleasant experiences! It doesn't help any but it's natural that mostly only those procedures that were difficult get spoken about. For each one that goes badly there'll be hundreds that go completely to plan. Of course for the person who has the bad experience these other positive encounters don't mean a thing.

Root canal treatment is normally like crucifixion, it's a doddle. smile However, it is true that rarely it can be a bit like getting stabbed.

To avoid the latter, if you feel any pain at all don't wait for the nerve to get even more inflamed, go and see someone. Or better still, where possible try to have regular check-ups and avoid the root treatment altogether.

Every root filled tooth must be crowned immediately to prevent fracture. Your tooth would not have broken one year later if this had been done.

Well I just had the tooth extraction option. My face swelled up to twice it's normal size, I couldn't sleep for 4 days due to the pain and ended up with a severe infection.

Am now on 2 x antibiotics plus pain killers. I have had a terrible week !

As above, the only pain was in my wallet. The days preceding it were unbelievable though, i have never felt pain like it, truly excruciating. Was very worried about the root canal but after he numbed it i was fine. £475.

As i was out of work and times were hard i left getting it crowned until suprise suprise it cracked eating a chicken royale. they have managed to save the tooth though and i go back in 2 weeks to have the moulds done.

gold is by far the best material for a crown. 60% is optimum. Only downside is the appearance....but IMHO the best!

I fell asleep during root canal treatment. Woke myself up with a monster snore - the humiliation and general hilarity was by far the most painful part!
