Music? (other than the engine)

I know I'm risking getting flamed for this but as I'm going to using my Griff all year round for all journies I'd like to be able to hear the stereo on the motorway for example above the engine and wind noise when the roofs on. I have a good quality Alpine head unit fitted that has enough power to drive 4 decent speakers but with the speakers fitted (2 or 3 way pioneer's I think) it sounds horribly tinny regardless of settings.
My first step is to get some better speakers, can anyone tell me the correct size before I have to dismantle them? are there severe restrictions in depth of the speaker I need to worry about or have others replaced them with some sucess?

Lastly (and this is where I'm going to get flamed) has anyone gone a step further and put something more substantial in a Griff, i.e. seperate Amp, component speakers with crossovers, maybe even a custom sub box (I'm sure I saw a very neat custom box for a Tamora or something that sits in the middle of the space behind the seats, shaped like the console) I know its adding weight and so on but what I have right now is diabolical so just thinking ahead ;o)
