On a lighter note; what were they fking about try to put the shovel together for! Stop faffing about, and get stuck in with yer hands!! That's what we did as kids!

It says he had avalanche breathing aparatus kit on so one would assume that he had a locator with him. There's no way that they'd have found him within 5 minutes without one. It's a fundamental bit of kit when heading off the beaten track.

They found him quickly because his glove came off and was on top of the snow where he was buried.

And he wasnt using the avalung at the start of his descent, so when the slide took him he only got it in the side of his mouth - so snow still got into his mouth/throat which explains the pretty harsh noises when he is buried - trying to breath when your throat has snow lodged in it..

As trooperiziz says if he had an avalung he would certainly have had a locator and his team mates were probably carrying probes and, as seen on the video, shovels. All of these bits would have been essential in saving his life.

The absolute life saving action is to spot and note the last sighting, get there accurately and start a search, there was probably lots of kit on the surface as it is not uncommon to have your kit and clothes torn off. The transceiver is worn as close to the skin as possible for this reason. If there is kit at the point of last sight then this is a good place to start but if you searched at every bit of kit then the victim would die. It is not easy to find people quickly using even the full kit.

4 minutes 30 is an incredible time to allow the avalanche to stop, communicate the last known point, ski there safely, get your transceivers out and turn them all to receive, conduct a search (even if you start right above the victim), get your probe and shovel out, dig down safely and clear breathing room.

I have never been unlucky enough to use any of that kit in anger but I have trained with it in very tough conditions and it is far, far from easy. The quality of their leader saved him simple as that.

Try reading this in 270 seconds, let alone DOING it!

The statistics are bad too. For example the survival probability then plummets from 92% at 15 min to only 30% at 35 min. More here.
