Any traders in ? - need a trade in value for a Cooper
Discussion
Car is Cooper with my friend as it's second owner, the first was as a dealer demo she told me. The spec and tale of the tape as follows:
05 plate
Cooper
Electric blue
Black roof and mirrors etc
Full length sun roof
Chilli pack including 17" Cooper S wheels
27,100 miles
Full main dealer service history via TLC pack including all receipts
MOT until March 2010
Road tax (not sure until when)
Never smoked in
Always garaged
The only small points to note are a couple of minor marks that need polishing out (Vauxhall dealer noted £65 for each to be done on his appraisal sheet) and each of the wheels are scuffed slightly.
She has taken it to a Vauxhall dealer and a VW dealer to part ex against a nearly new Corsa or Polo with a sticker price of £11-11,500.
One offered £5500 trade in and one offered £5700.
I am hopeful the car is worth more given similar cars for sale on forecourts so could one of you gents give me a black book price so I can help her negotiate with dealers going forward.
Cheers

You're not wrong !!!!Vauxhall appear to be taking the wee wee with their price.
She is hoping for c£6500, possibly a couple of hundred less if she finds a car she likes. Given that it just needs a decent pre-forecourt prep and the wheels refurbished I don't believe she is asking too much.
Keep the info coming gents

What about asking your local MINI dealers if they want to take it off your hands, wont cost you anything to enquire and they are always harping on about how the 2nd hand car market is "up".
She phoned her local dealer last week and they weren't interested in the car due to it's age
The Vauxhall dealer mentioned that they were struggling to get good used cars in and quickly followed that by saying they could not put a Mini on a forecourt filled with Vauxhalls, SEAT's, Renault's etc

I'm fairly certain a dealer could make a quick turn on this car and get £1000-1200 profit in a week or so, more if they are prepared to wait. As such I can't figure out the market and if the dealer stories of it being on the up for good 2nd hand cars is true or just a way to get you into a conversation about values etc.
As she is not in a rush to complete the trade I'll continue to help her look in the hope we can eventually get a trade-in bid that reflects a "fair" value against a car she wants to own. One thing that has struck me when visiting dealers with her is the number of staff in dealerships sitting around doing nothing and costing money as opposed to earning any. You would have thought the opportunity to seal a deal with someone who has a good car to trade in and c£6-7000 cash to add to it might attract more interest than it is currently doing

Why not private sale?
I was at an auction a couple of weeks ago and was shocked how low some of the cars were being valued. The dealer will always go "worst case" with a value and thats at the auctions.
If she isnt in a rush to sell then an ad on gumtree and pistonheads classifieds wont hurt and she may be closer to her £6.5k.

A quick update.
The Vauxhall dealer called her this morning to reveal he has tracked down a few cars in their network that suit her requirements. All are less than a year old, 5 doors and with the 1.4 litre engine in SXi trim. He has also upped his part ex offer to £6000, which is still £670 short of the web site valuation of her car in "average" condition, and I think her one is nearer "good".
We're off to see the new Polo on Friday so will let him stew until then.
Cheers for the input so far, but more is always welcome.

Grey Ghost, the problem the trader has is footfall. If his forecourt is full of nice shiny 1-2 year old Vauxhalls, he is unlikely to find a buyer for your older Mini. Unless he has a Mini dealer in group (who may have the same issue) then he'll want it auctioned. He is therefore quoting you a price he thinks it will make at auction (minimum).
The fact he has upped his partex price doesn't mean he has changed his opinion. He is now basically giving you £500 from his profit on the Corsa. carfile.net are discounting (main dealer supplied) Corsa 1.4 SXI by over £1300.
If you managed to get 7k private and £1300 discount you'd stand to save yourself £2800 on your first deal. You could of course fire the Mini through the auction yourself with a 6k reserve and then order from carfile making a nice saving of £1800. I'd guess your Mini would make very strong money at auction.
Failing that ring round the local second hand dealers and ask them if they want it, after all they will be the ones at the auctions.

I have and he might be interested depending on what my friend finally settles on buying, currently down to a Corsa or the Polo with the Polo a hot favourite. We went to see the new Polo today and she rather likes it. She is due to test drive a couple (different engines) week after next when the dealer has them both and will make her mind up then. If she orders one it will be at least 2-3 months before it is delivered (I didn't realise it was that new
) so it might be the right time for Mark to upgrade from his Mini one......and I'm sure your eldest daughter wouldn't mind taking ownership of that now it has had it's major overhaul and valet I'll keep him in the loop.
