I've got an early Griff ('92) which has the fuel sender unit located on the left hand side of the tank. (I think later cars had them on the top of the tanks?).

I need a new sender unit and have tried most of the usual TVR parts suppliers - so far no luck. Anyone got any ideas where I can get one from - or what the source vehicle the unit is from?

Thanks all

Ant.

TVRcarparts supplied mine, well, they sold me an "S" one. They are the same apart from the swinging arm. The main body and track are the same.

Unclip the arm off each and swap....

The S series has a side mounted fuel sender unit. Its located about half way up the tank. My S3C is a similar year to your Griff so I wonder if the units were the same?? If so TVR Car Parts have them for the S so it may be worth asking them the question in case they are the same?
If you want to see the S series ones I think there was a post not too long ago there about them with links to piccies so could be worth looking there as well.

Later - I've just checked the old one I have in the garage and the mounting plate is about 2.5 ins dia

Talk to ETB.

Aftermarket gauge manufacturers made their gauges calibrated to major manufacturers senders. ETB have to know what the electronic specification is, and what senders that corresponds to in order to fix gauges.

Are you certain it's knackered? Mine stopped working after some to-ing and fro-ing abuse at a track day. Couldn't find a replacement at the time, but about six months later it just started working again. It's been fine for more than a year now.

David i fixed an early Chimeara unit for a friend if it is similar there is a push fit resistance element in sprung phosphor bronze clips i re tensioned these plugged it back in & all was well. Meter the resistance element first & see if this is OK it is probably a poor connection. Is the guage reading full or empty ?

Thanks for the replies. To add, the gauge will read completely zero when the car is filled up. It will remain on zero until about 1/4 full. Then it slowly comes into life (fluctuates between zero and 1/4 full for awhile and then settles into its true reading). It will then read reasonably accurately it seems from 1/4 full to empty again.

As the sender works by a contact moving up and down a resistance dependent on the fuel level the symptoms you describe fit with the sender having a break in the resistance wire above the 1/4 full point - ie when above the break there is no reading but when below the break the thing will read progressively from the first point of contact with the bottom half of the resistance, but initially a bit off and on as the level in the tank moves about and as there is no damping on the sender unit it fluctuates until low enough to start to read more reliably. So sounds like the sender is broken and will need to be replaced as I can't believe the resistance can be repaired??
