Hi
I keep coming back to this car when searching, what advise is there with a car this age and mileage??? Its the engine i would like, also i like the colour. At this price it means i can keep my other car for commuting, and have a budget for spider alloys, headlight conversion etc etc. The concern i have before viewing is the price, especially when coming from a dealer. It all seems a bit cheap.
Help!!
Thanks
Mark

Price looks about right to me in the current climate, check the chassis outriggers, and all the other usual stuff, but better still get an independant inspection. Expect a few niggles, but they all have that.

I don't know this particular car, but it looks OK in the photos. Mileage isn't too bad, at least it proves it's been used fairly regularly which is a good thing. A dealer will probably have paid peanuts for this if taken in a part-ex deal, so he's probably making a nice profit on it why he's able to throw in a 'comprehensive warranty' - just check exactly what he means by comprehensive. Any Cerbera has the potential to empty your wallet, your thinking correctly by wanting to keep your old car as the daily run around, but my advice would be to forget about lashing out on a light upgrade and a set of spiders, keep that money in the bank for 12 months 'just in case'. there's plenty of other things that you'll need to spend money on first smile. Check the history, check the out-riggers, go for a drive in it, and (try to) let your head rule your heart. Good luck.

Thanks, for the advice. With this mileage, would the car be expected to have had a re-build by now? Also would the clutch have been replaced by now? Good advice on keeping the cash side, i have budgeted £400 a month spend on the car.

Clutch yes, it should have been replaced with the improved lighter clutch, re build not really many of these running around with a whole load more miles on than this and are fine.

Mechanically they are a very strong car.

at 47K and 12 yrs old the engine COULD be moving toward rebuild time.
The car looks ok price wise, not a bargain but about right assuming chassis ok and paint not too bad. Make sure it isnt Rosso red or you will need to factor in a full respray at some point soon.

That was my concern, it could be cheap to purchase, however i could be looking at a £5K re-build (not sure on costs for this). I guess the best thing to do is have a look at the history work wise.

The prob with buying from a dealer is you dont look the owner in the eye and see how he / she has treated the car. I would look for a known car.

I've got a similar aged car & mileage that i've had a fair while. Pre 98 chassis could be in a lot better condition than some of the post 97 cars. If the oil usage has got heavy, a rebuild is about 3k if you fancy getting it done. As mentioned, there's higher mileage cars with no problems. The old headlights might be the classics one day smile I'm viewing off my phone, so i can't make the colour out. But I believe the Rosso Red is difficult/impossible to match.

looks pretty good, have you seen this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1998-R-TVR-Cerbera-4-5-PETRO...

ok i know its a cat c but i personally think this only affects the resale price and if your planning on keeping it, it doesn't really matter as long as its been done right, TVR's get written off very easilly when you consider how much just one half of the front end cost, that before paint, hire car and other costs, plus there a lot of cars out there that may not be an insurance write off but have still had a whack or two in their time, they just been repaired and wouldn't go on a register!

its a great colour, looks like its got full leather, dials look great in black, twin lights and spiders, oh yeah and its got the 4.5 engine spin good mileage too (31,000).

as for warranties theres nothing stopping you going out and getting your own from a big name company but from what i've heard trying to get a warranty company to pay out on any claim is not easy, i'm sure that there are a few people on here who could give you advise on who to and who not to use. if its the garage offering a verbal warranty then your wasting your time, anything more than a blown light bulb then they are not going to pay out, especially with the sort of bills cerbera's attract.

just go with your eye wide open, check what the people above have already mentioned, let the car sit still running and make sure the fans cut in and out, before you go and see it tell them to stick some fuel in the tank, the test drive needs to be aleast 20 min on decent open roads, they are very intimadating cars to drive and you'll be too nervous for the first 5 mins to notice anything.

in the long run we all buy these cars with our hearts, its too hard not too, good luck and happy hunting.

Contacted the guy on that one, i can only go to £10K and he will meet his sale price i think. Plus he is over 4 hours drive.
I am going to try and get the silver one, making the call tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed..

The silver one would be nicer if someone hadnt put the wrong lights on the front and back and hadnt put the wrong windscreen surrounds on it. I do recognise the car though and it was owned by someone on here 3 yrs ago AFAIK.

i remember, that one was for sales twice last year and noy agian. same price by the way as well.

what i dont really like is that none of the buyers was really driving the car... mileage is about the same.

Oh that has put a dampner on things. Your heart wants to say it might not have been for them after buying or did not get to drive it?! However perhaps there is a major problem. The silver car ticks all the boxes style wise for me. However the original car on the posting still gets my vote, i can make the changes to this to get it looking like the silver one.

4.2 37k just had partial rebuild, front of chasis painted and spruced up, out riggers are good. spiders, headlight conversion, tuscan front seats, nitrons, full respray in original colour, new hedgaskets, new fluids throughout, gearbox overhaul and refurb. new pads, decatted. original seats included, all new speakers including door card speakers.

11 months mot 5 and a bit months tax.

lots of paper work. purchased from top cats racing prior to me buying it.
no service history book/wallet as such but lots of receipts and paper work for services etc from top cats and racing green, lots of old history from original owner about cam changes due to noise, bell housing changed and new clutch etc etc.

if youre intersted drop me an email.

im not looking to sell it, and it wont be advertised, but if an enthusiast is looking, i wouldnt mind it going to a good home. no exspense spared on the car, what ever it needed i gave it. (only down point is front 2 wheels need a refurb as i cuaght 3 spokes loading and unloading on a narow trailor when going for respray, i have new tvr logos to go on the spokes when they are painted.) i am going to get it done in the new year.

Something odd about the silver car. It says in the add it is 1998 but looks to be a later lightweight with carbon fibre window surrounds painted front and back.

Why would anybody make a newer car look older?
