air con has packed up
Discussion
hey guys. coming home last night and air con started making horrible noises as if somthing is catching somthing else while its going round, a bit like a plastic fan hitting anoth bit of plastic. it only does this if air con is on. has the compressor packed up or is it somthing else. my car is misbehaving as she doesnt like cold damp days. lol. the car in general is runnig quite bad due to exhaust blowing but this being sorted next week. also does anyone no how to turn the idle up as its at 500 rpm and keeps dropping lower, or is this due to exhuast blowing.
cheers for all your help in advance.

It sounds like it could be the air con clutch engaging and disengaging quickly.
Mine did this.
I went to a mate of a mate who maintains auto air con.
They checked the system for leaks and then Vacuumed it and re filled with 950gms of coolant, this worked well in my case.
According to this guy the Noble formula of 1Kg was a little high and in the right circumstances could make the system act as if it there wasn't enough coolant in.

Depends where the noise is coming from...Open the rear clam shell with the engine running and the air con `on` and see if it is coming from the compressor. The latter is mounted on the drivers side `front` of the engine close to the baulkhead behind the drivers seat. If it`s the clutch engaging/disengaging it will be very obvious. It`s a metallic `click` rather than a `plastic` noise though. If the clutch is continually engaging and then almost instantly dropping out it`s probably the system high pressure switch cutting the power to the electromagnetic compressor clutch. On my car the switch was faulty and the compressor clutch got wrecked by the continual in/out operation. Get an air con specialist to check. (It`s unlikely to be too little refrigerant in the system as this triggers a low pressure switch which means the compressor clutch will not engage to prevent damage to the compressor). If it`s a continual grinding noise from the compressor it could be a bearing has gone.
only ever seem one fault with air con on a noble, check for gas pressure as if gas is low there is no cooling of the compressor and the bearing will over heat. the fault i found was a leeking condenser unit causing the pump to fail. send me your e mail address as my web site isnt finished yet so i can send you the big passage i have written on this
Hi
If the aircon is working you will hear the compressor clutch clonk in as you switch it on. If not I think the trinary switch stops it happening and you will need a) a regas or a month later b) a seal or two fixed and then another regas. Well that was my story but after a decent fix it still works fine nearly 12 months later.

Hi rob, no there is no noice when switching on. What do you suggest?
Try to find a decent aircon specialist rather than go to somebody quoting a cheap regas price (which is what I did first off). They will see how much refrigerant is in there, mine was zero, then vacuum-regas with dye for leaks-check for leaks looking for dye or with a sniffer-fix leaks-top up again and hopefully you're good to go. Mine had a couple of bad connections at the compressor.Zoobeef said:
If there is a leak in the system, i.e there is no refridgerant in there when they hook the manifold up. Then it is illigal for them to recharge with refrigerant with a known leak. They should be recharging with OFN to find the leak first
Not quite the case, and a grey area. Fgas regs state that no refrigerant system over 3 kg should be charged then left in a state where the leak is known but not fixed. As R134a has a ODP of 0 and a max charge (in Noble's case) of 800 grams, it is not illegal. However it is good pratice to vac charge with dry nitrogen if you think there is a leak, correct the fault, vac, recharge with the correct volume of gas and do a full leak test. This is how garages are able to avoid the costs of becoming Fgas registered due to the low charging weight of a recharge.

800 grams ? I always have 950 grams.... works fine.
From memory 800ish, it was more the 3kg point I was trying to get across. 800-950 is alot compaired to other makes for example my Vito's charge is 350grams. The reason for this mainly is due to the length of pipe run, compressor at the rear and the condenser at the front, so I would not be surprised with a 950 gram charge.Actually read the EPA stuff now and it only mentions the 3kg thing on static systems. Vehicle ac it says you can do whatever the customer wants if you cant find a leak. Didnt know that and they definatly discourage that on the ac course i was on. Makes things alot easier as just recharge with a uv trace rather than trying to listen for OFN leaking out

mine makes a noise every 30 seconds or so sounds like a compessor strarting up. is that normal
No, sounds like its cycling on one of the pressure switches, my gess is the high pressure switch. From memory, I think one of the two cooling fans runs all the time when the a/c is selected, I might be wrong, worth checking your a/ccondenser fan is working with your a/c.
