www.auctionsniper.com - starts you off with three free snipes then for every person that signs up on your recommendation you get three more - so if you wouldn't mind...?

...but have inevitably paid more than you need to have to win said items... as other people have had time to react to your high bid (or indeed you have been shill bid up to your max limit)hornetrider said:

I've never seen it and probably never will. I have been buying from ebay for about 4 years. I have bought all sorts of things and have never paid more than I was willing.
Thing with ebay is, people think that if they bid last they win. It's who bids most and earliest who wins. I decide when I look at an item how much I'm willing to pay for it, I bid that and wait. Then (invariably) I pay and wait to receive my item. I have discussed this with many people and nobody has been able to offer me a logical explanation for sniping!

Which implies you only use eBay for cheap tat... correct?Surely you can see that if bidding is at, say, £50 2 days before the end of the auction and the item is 'worth' say £100, then it's best to wait until the last moment to bid? Rather than putting in a bid of £100 straight away and giving people 2 days to slowly bid up to your maximum?
I've never used sniping software. I decide how much I want to pay as a maximum and then bid quite late. If sopmeone else gets it by paying more, fair enough.

I had an old VHS 3 hour tape picked up off a record fair in the 80s with old tv clips of ultravox on from 1976 - 1984. 37 quid it went for, precisely because 2 people both wanted it (and it was in the days before sniping software I suppose!). And yes, I was happy that day...

I've bought things ranging from £1 up to £400 granted not in the league of many a PHer but still not cheap tat.
edit: No I don't see the reason not to bid early as my experience shows. The beauty of ebay is the way the bids work, if I bid £100 the bid only goes up by the minimun above the last bid (or opening bid) so nobody knows how much I have bid until they bid against me. If they bid more than me then I don't loe out as I wasn't willing to pay that much for it, if they don't beat my bid I win, if they bid the same as me I win as I bid first!
Now when the end of the auction comes around and the last minute snipers appear, I get to see if my max bid is enough. It doesn't matter when a sniper places their bid all that matters is the price!

The truth is that sniping is only necessary because there are people who do not actually enter the maximum they are really willing to pay into the ebay bidding mechanism.
Sniping has netted me a good few bargains. In fact I have only ever succeeded in obtaining anything from ebay by sniping.
