I started commuting in May and have been dropping in and out of various Evans branches ever since. I totted up how much I've spent since May - nearly £700....I'm buying good gear on the basis I want to commute year-round and I want stuff that will last 5+ years. Still, it shows just how much you can spend on something that looks fairly straightforwrd to the casual observer.

Abus Lock £80
Specialized Helmet £120
Black GoreTex Jacket £120
Goretex Shorts £70
Goretex shorts £80
2 x front lights £40
Yellow Goretex Jacket £130
2 x w/proof socks £40
Thermal skull cap £20

Total £680

Not as much as you smile

Helmet - £30
Shorts - £20
Shoes - £35
Jacket - £35
Lights - £30
Lock - £30
Pump(s) - £30
T-Shirt - £20
Computer - £20

But all within the cycle scheme, I've just started out.

Yeah, I've gone a bit top-endy on the kit I bought. The logic is I spent a lot of money on my bike back in 1993 (!) in the view that it would last me a good three years - and it's still doing the job.

Annoyingly I could have bought all that lot on the scheme only I would have had to wait till April 2010. My employer runs all salary related schemes (bike, pension, childcare, healthcare etc) on tax year to tax year basis. And I didn't want to be wet/cold/invisible/dead in the 11 months between deciding to commute on the bike and the next chance I would have to elect myself onto the scheme. Yes I was ONE MONTH LATE. Durrrh.

Heh heh. It all adds up. I do it the way my wife does it with new clothes. I sort of sneak it all into the house bit by bit. Got caught with the fluoro-yellow jacked yesterday though.....

If your cycling to commute, it's still cheaper than running a typical P/H car, even if you use only the finest gear.

If your cycling as a hobby, It's still cheaper than many other hobbies I can think of.

So far this year i'm upto about 7K on bikes and kit. Absolutly love it. There is nothing like waiting for that big white parcel from the postman!!

Yes, I guess it's cheaper mile for mile that a C43. Or is it? I've spent nearly £700 and covered 750 miles. Hang on....
