We use 10/60 Millers full synthetic in our race essex engine and drop it after every race/test weekend - oil being cheaper than engines.
We also use 10/60 Millers full synthetic in our heavily modified turbo-charged essex engine - oil being cheaper than engines.
Oil advised by the very serious very experinced engine builder that built both engines.
I would be tempted to try it iin a fast road engine in an every day user or a fun car. Its not too expensive relative to other full synthetics.
I now sit back awaiting a flaming for advising full synthetics for older engines..

Thanks I will check it out.
I forgot to mention, it was Silkolene Pro S 10w-50 that i had been advised to use.
Not too far away then, I like the protection of 60 weight because the heat the oil sees going through the turbo and the race engine oil gets a bit warmer than a road car would (but not much though).I forgot to mention, it was Silkolene Pro S 10w-50 that i had been advised to use.

I would advocate Valvolive R 20 / 50 which is a good old fashioned mineral oil and old racers favourite but! only on the premis that you change it regularly IE at most 3000 miles or 3/4 months
If you are wanting to track the car regularly and are going through a rapid engine heat cycle and high revs regularly then as per John I would switch to a good synthetic oil of a 20 / 50 or even better 10 / 60 grade. Valvoline is a good bit cheaper though, but John like me is an advocate of oil being cheaper than engine.

He certainly does not - I actually resent that (and no I'm not having a bad day). N
He makes considered judgement and takes advice off folk that know of what they speak first hand. He works hard for what he has and does spend a fair bit of his hard earned on toys, but not without thinking hard firts.
What he never does is ask advice and when given the information from the learned advisor, go a cheaper route because he can't afford to act on the advice - he tends to wait until he can or forget the idea altogether if he hasn't already set off down a particular blind alley. That certainly does not equate to your statement Neil.

I've always been advised to use a heavier grade oil for the Essex, Ford state a SAE 20W/50, I use 'Valvolive racing' oil.
You were conspicuous by your absence at Cadwell last week....your lad isnt a bad replacment though. You were missed.
By the way when is the race at Oulton?

Let me get back to you on the adoption.........both you say.......
By the way, Valvolive don't seem to list that old fashioned oil anymore, maybe time to move with technology and see what it has conjured up.

Oulton is 17th October. Qually and both races before 13.05...then the bar!! See you there?

Change first sentence to John has more to spend on oil and races his cars so a more budget concious route would be..........
I humbly and publicly apologise over the airwaves for any offence caused which wasn't my intention..

I USED TO USE NOWT BUT VALVOLINE RACING
HOWEVER NOT TOO PLEASED WITH OIL PRESSURE AFTER A GOOD 'BRAEING'
I PUT MILLERS 10/60 IN, PROBLEM SORTED.
AS JOHN STATED, OIL COMES ALOT CHEAPER THAN ENGINES
I PICKED UP A NEW ENGINE FOR MY 'S' ON SATURDAY
NOWT BUT 10/60 WILL BE GOING IN !
REGARDS IAN !

Mr simpson has really spoiled my day now and dropped the bombshell that old valvoline R is now no longer available. The modern equivalent is VR1 which is a good bit more expensive than it used to be. This now makes the cost / performance argument with valvoline a lot harder to justify.
valvoline racing not available anymore, I think I need counselling.
What is very disturbing Ian is your report of oil pressure drop after just 1.45 seconds

And I cannot have any croissants at Oulton !!!
Going into the garage before my day gets any worse.

Ian, as far as I know, people typically run-in NEW engines on mineral based oil until they get ring seat and then switch to synthetics. You should probably discuss this with your engine builder. HOWEVER NOT TOO PLEASED WITH OIL PRESSURE AFTER A GOOD 'BRAEING'

Hello all,
I am after some advice as to the most suitable oil for my modified essex V6 engine.
The car is used daily, and on relativly short journeys too.
Thanks Liam

modern synthetics offer a combination of attributes from lower (10W30) and higher (20W50) viscosity oils by expanding the effective useable temperature range. (=10W50)
I wouldn't use 20W50 during a cold winter in any car I actually like without a sump warmer &maybe a core heater too.
(but I did in my Mustang!
