I recently got a new radar detector fitted to the car, first place I went round was M25 variable limit, it did not go off once when I went though all the gantries, does anyone know how many are active (if any)
There are road works at the moment on M25 so expected some to be on.
I am a little worried that the detector is shafted.

My Bel 990 (getting a bit old now) usually gives a reasonable amount of warning as you approach live gantries. Obviously it doesn’t go off at every gantry as some of them have no live cameras.

If you detector has switchable radar bands it may be worth checking you have the correct radar band for Gatsos switched on.

Then you have a duff one - not made by Rocky Mountain Radar or one of its derivatives is it? if so it won't even tell you if the camera was on your on bonnet.

Its a Cheetah, heard good things about them, it picked up the normal stuff like auotmatic doors etc well enough, I will hunt round for some more cameras and see if it is faulty.

Did not know if the scameras on the M25 were live at all.

I drove through the roadworks round by Heathrow last week and I decided that the Variable Speed Limit gantries have been decommissioned, presumably as there is a fixed limit of 40 through there.

This view is reinforced by the fact they have installed a few standard Gatso's which had bags over them saying "Camera not in use yet" or similar.

However not sure its a risk I would take!

Hmmm. The Origin B2 thinks that about 60% of the gantries are live.

I have no reason to doubt it....

Out of interest how does a GPS system know which camera's are live and which are dummys? Do the authorities release this information to the GPS database companies? I'm thinking particulary about the M25 camera's which on the A3-M4 section are on virtually every gantry but i doubt they are all live

Basically GPS systems don't know what gatso's are live and which are not.

There's no one unit that can do everything that you need for total protection (well as near as)

You need a Road Angel (with Laser Alert) - something like a Bel990 for identifying which sites are live (of course forwarding facing IR camera's aren't picked up) and you need a LAser Jammer (blinder Max). Ideally a front and rear jammer

Not all the gantries in the M25 VSL have cameras, but they all have displays. The absence of cameras is noticable from behind (ie. the opposite carriageway - I do not recommend looking as this distracts from watching the road - sorry, watching your speed ) - Streaky

My Snooper S6 Has the Radar / Laser Module attached hence why i pick up radar on a GPS system.

When I commuted from jc16 to jc14 around 4 years ago only about 1/3 or 1/4 of the gantries had cameras - my detector now thinks its far less - although I haven't travelled the roadworks yet.

I wouldn't be at all suprised if the gantries and their cameras get taken down and dismantled altogether. As I understand it, they're adding in new lanes on that stretch and since those gantries straddle the existing lanes, you can't add anymore lanes whilst the gantries are in place.

They'll put up the fixed GATSO's to replace them whilst the work is being done and when they're done with the expansion, I expect they'll put up brand new ones...

I'm interested in this as i've just bought an Origin B2 snooper which will be installed next week. It's a GPS system with a laser detector, so i guess that i won't pick up any camera's not in the database as cameras are radar based?

Basically your right, you wont have the radar detector to pick up the radar which is used in gatso's, so it will probably miss anything not in its database. But i believe Origin has a good database anyway if you keep it updated.

The "temporary" Gatso's are now live by the way ... saw two go off whilst heading over to the Surrey Run 5 meeting point on Sunday morning.

None of them triggered by us of course...

Can second that. Temporary gatsos are now live. M4 -> A30 is the daily run, they went live yesterday (19th Jan).

Have located and set new camera positions in the Road Pilot and uploaded to their database. Now anyone with a Morpheous/Geodesy device should be able to syncronise to get the GPS locations.
