Is there an idiots way to check if a car has been resprayed ?
Reason I ask is I went to look at a Z4M yesterday and all the panels bar the drivers rear quarter had the usual orange peel effect. This panel though had a mirror finish like someone had buffed it with one of porta thingies but why only that panel ?
I looked in the boot and around the petrol cap but there didn't seem to be any signs of a respray.
Maybe I'm just being abit cautious or just the showroom lights, but its my money and I would rather know now than later.
Rest of the car and wheels were mint bar a few light paintwork scratches here and there
thanks

My buddy works at a BMW dealer near Yarm and i popped in to see him one day. As he was busy with a customer i have a look around some of the brand new spankers in the showroom. I was shocked by the paint finish. Pretty much all of them were very orange pealy which is discusting for £30-50K cars.

It may well have had a dent in it (shopping trolley style) that they (or the owner before selling) had rectified. If it was filled/painted/polished you might get this effect? You may be able to borrow a paint depth gauage from a local detailing fanatic but depending on the model it might only be able to tell you how thick the paint is in comparison to other parts of the car rather than breaking down individual layers and telling you about those.
I have a fairly basic guage and it's useful for picking out parts that have been filled or resprayed but you really need to know which panels have original paint on to be able to compare properly - if it's a decent repair / respray the paint should be a similar thickness to the original but is more likely thicker.
Hi,
Just joined after trying to find out about paint defects on my new Lexus GS 450H so not just European car get bad factory paint jobs. I've looked at BASF site and PPG site at paint defects and BASF one gives very useful info BUT I cannot find the primary defect on my paintwork. They have a saw tooth edge shape and one is V shaped and there is nothing on these sites about a defect like that. I've found it impossible to photograph the defects which can only be seen at in certain angles and light conditions but does anyone have any idea what this could be caused by? Lexus HQ are going to look at the car next week and I have asked the dealer for a replacement car as I think most of the car would need respraying.
