e36 engine issues
Discussion
i have an e36 323i 1998. the head gasket went and the block is warped so i bought a short engine for it from a breakers (i told them i wanted a 1998 323 engine) they sent a 1997 323 engine and told me its compatible. the crank sensor is on the other end of the engine. will the engine still work using the same wiring loom? and are there any other issues i need to know about?
any help would be greatly appreciated as i am quickly starting to get frustrated with the car.

Most of the M52s had it at the front, only the last few had the rear sensor.
BMW mention an adaptor loom as the rear sensor is going to be a 12v type, or at least any of the earlier 5v types are meant to be upgraded to a 12v sensor when changed, and a little loom will take 12v from a plug by the vanos
there is a little info on the upgraded sensor type.

It should work fine whatever end it is on, but if you get problems, it might need a 12v feed (which the engine loom would have powered) if it doesn't have the adaptor loom fitted.

rite engine in and adapter loom all sorted. but i have to turn the engine over a few times before it starts and when i go to rev it, it hesitates before reving. all the power is there high in the band though.
the fuel tank has been run pretty low, and i think there is rubbish from the tank now blocking the fuel filter.
does this sound right or is there other things to do with the installation that could be wrong?

Hi, did you ever resolve this ?
Im having a similar issue, timing chain snapped on my 99 328i, have sourced a replacement engine from a 97 328i.
On the old engine (1999), crank sensor is on the block, towards the rear.
On the new engine (1997), crank sensor is on the front
I dont have the complete loom from the donor engine as its been chopped. Can i just fit the loom from the original engine onto the new one ?

As far as i know, the ecu doesn't worry about signal voltage, and the pulse wheel teeth are the same, just the rear sensor requires a 12v input, hence the modded loom.
You should therefore be able to use any signal as an input, as long as it has the correct feed, 5v for the front, 5 or 12v for the rear.
If the rear is the e46 12v type, the connector plug is part of the sensor, ie, there are no leads off the sensor, the loom plugs onto it.
If the sensor has flying leads on it, leading to a plug 6 inches away or so, it's a 5v sensor.
So i guess use whatever you find easiest, depending on looms and sensors you have.

You could try it, but the rear type might not like the front hole.
Either way, the car loom, will be trying to feed a rear sensor with 5v, so you can extend the wires.
If you have the 12v e46 type plug-on-sensor crank sensor, then you will have that extra adaptor loom to get 12 volts from a vanos solenoid.
You can junk that adaptor loom, and extend the wires again and use the front sensor that came with the car.

Also, I think 1998 is the year when BMW introduced the M52TU engine (which has double VANOS). The 1997 323 engine should be the M52 single-VANOS engine.
If yours is double VANOS, then that would indicate something being different. But I thought both M52 and M52TU had rear crank sensors.
Don't think the 323 had the TU with the double VANOS? That was introduced on the E46 I think. If yours is double VANOS, then that would indicate something being different. But I thought both M52 and M52TU had rear crank sensors.
Don't know about the specifics your either, but I know that the main difference between the 97 and the 98, is the Nikasil lining, which reacted with a high degree of sulphur found in fuel in the UK. The nikasil lining was then replaced for Alusil lining in March 1998.
A nikasil could potentially be prone to a loss of compression due to accentuated wear on the piston head and cylinder linings. Might be worth a check.
