Mornin' all,

Quick question - the oil needs topping up in my S4 ('54 plate V8 car) - what oil do people use and where's the best place to buy?

Ta very much smile

Not sure what oil, but Homebase are half the price of halfords on some oils. Worth a look once you know what oil to use. Give an Audi centre a call, the information they give you might be right. But I wouldn't trust them without double checkinglaugh

I use castrol edge 5W 30 (or Mobil 1) which are 2 of the longlife oils recommended by VW and Audi. Both are about £15 per litre at halfords or BP garage

A list can be found in your car manual.

Paul.

Interesting, this is also recommended for my 1.4 FSI but I changed to T&D last year. Nowhere on the bottle does it say longlife. Oh well does no harm lol. A couple of months ago Castrol Edge 5w30 was £7.98 (something like that) at Homebase. Maybe worth popping in to your local one to check if it's still there.

I fill and top-up with this (takes 1L every 2K miles), this is what Audi recomended.

It can be bought from Halfords.

Yep, apparently the 5V per cylinder valve train uses oil, even the 1.8t suffers.

I had it checked out after I bought it, no leaks and no smoke at all, the Audi cheif tech said (in private) that all 5v per cylinders suffer varying degrees of oil use. My mates TT's Leon Cupra's and Octavia VRS's suffer as well.

Also it hasn't got any worse over the last 26k miles so I don't worry.

1 litre every 2K isn't much really (especially how I drive it), it's only £5 a month in oil.

Coolant? Never needed topping up.

Like I say, it varies from car to car, I know people with V8's and 1.8t's that have less miles but use more oil.

There's definately nothing wrong with the car, it's been checked by Audi and a couple of indy's.

V8 S4 dropping coolant is almost always a weeping auxilliary radiator; as for oil 1l in 1k is typical.

Castrol SLX Longlife 5w30 which as stated above is (I think) called Edge in its retail flavour.
