Thread post arrangement

WTF is going on?

I can't make out what the hell I have to do to follow a thread in sequence of posts...there seems to be no arrangement at all.

If I click on the what I presume to be the first page it turns out to be the last, if I then click on the final page (now presuming its the first) its not and all the pages in the middle are just all over the shop...
