Afternoon TV chaps,

I'm looking to buy a big screen telly for my Mum. She'll just use it as a stand alone item, and watch the occasional DVD.
Very tempted by the SAMSUNG PS42A416, a 42" plasma with freeview and freesat in a nice modern casing.
I can buy one with a 5 year warranty for £440, which is a fraction of what I paid for a 42" Panny about 5 years ago.

Are these a good buy?

Thanks,

Dom H

Only 514 for the 42" Panasonic, or 37" Pan for the same money. That's where my cash would go, I have 2 Panny plasmas.

Not sure where you get the Freesat bit from as its Freeview only.

As per a previous poster you will be better off in the long run, going for the PANA 42X10 with the FREE 5 year manufacturers warranty.

If you buy it from an Independant dealer you'll get a FREE 5 year manufacturers warranty.

I'm reading a lot about this on here.

Almost to the point of worrying - are they so unreliable that a 5-year warranty is a must?

Another vote for the Panny here, I have two and they're great.

Strange logic!

The manufacturer is that confident in the product, that they are able to offer the warranty, as they most likely won't be seeing it again.

Dont forget that the FREE warranty offered ,is from the manufacturer and not a goppy third party one!

I guess it's just the "don't buy from a chain, you only get a 1-year warranty - you need the 5-year warranty from an indie" - as though a 1-year warranty wasn't enough.

I do see what you're saying though. smile

It's really put in place to give the smaller independent dealers a small hand to try and compete with the purchasing power of the larger superstore types. Even though we may be slightly more expensive, with the addition of perhaps technical assistance and other benefits inc the warranty, it gives consumers another option to consider besides buying the cheapest around.
