Well, maybe not proof. And the research is probably a bit suspect, statistically speaking. That said, true to popular usage of dodgy stats, I'll believe as it fits what I always thought anyway.

Not sure I'd take anything on The Register too seriously, but I reckon certains things really can "set up 'moral credentials' in people’s minds that give license to selfish or questionable behavior". Look at mono-speeding: 'I never do more than 43mph, EVER, therefore I must be safe,' (despite the fact they're in a 30mph zone at 3 o'clock in the afternoon past a school).
